’m 59, all my kids are grown and I live in MidCity BR. I’ve never been a victim of crime here, and go to bars and restaurants all the time without fear. I walk all over my neighborhood and bike to LSU for various sports.

That’s terrific

I mean, it’s not.

Statistically speaking, BR is worse than most any city of its size.

I live at the entrance to my subdivision. You can see my house and garage from the main road. I accidentally left my garage door open overnight, with interesting stuff to rifle through, including ammo cans, boxes, my car glove box, lawn tools, etc. Nothing was touched.Katy, TX

I have done that several times and my wife 8-9 times over the years in our home……in Baton Rouge/ St George Louisiana….nothing ever touched.

There are very safe places to live in Baton Rouge/ St George if you are willing to pay.

This is a chickenshit statement. You’re likely saying this from some ivory tower, thinking that a trip down Magazine Street is cool, and chillin in the FQ during Mardi Gras and Jazzfest means you are well-assimilated with culture.

You’ve bragged about living in some not-so-great cities, and refer to criminals of all color. Again…statistics show where you could attack the problem. You’d rather get an authentic po-boy and hang with your buddies near, but not in, the hood.

You’d rather not address a problem, a trend, because you are telling yourself to react and respond. Someone as well-traveled as you should know that BR is in serious trouble. You should know that addressing the problem might improve the city.

You’re belittling people for wanting to move out for the sake of family safety. My guess is you don’t really get INTO the hood. You say you don’t live in fear, like it’s a badge of honor, but my guess is you wouldn’t wander through NBR, north of Downtown St. Louis, Skid Row, etc. offering to buy local cuisine and art.

Ellick-1,972 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.
B.R.- 1,0004 violent crimes per 100,000 residents

So Ellick is worse than B.R..

It is gotten pretty bad last couple of years, thugs in cars shooting at each other on MacArthur Drive,at the traffic circle,on North Drive at entrance to Sam’s,all kinds of places..
I live in Grant Parish, very little crime here.People in Grant parish hate to go to Ellick.
Population of Ellick is dropping as people move to Woodworth area,Pineville and towards Deville area.
I see people I know from Ellick shopping at the Wal Mart in Pineville because they are afraid to go to the one in Ellick.

It’s sad to see,I grew up in Ellick during a time when nobody locked their doors to their house or cars, many people never took the keys out of their cars.
There are a lot of very good black people in Ellick but they keep pretty quiet about the crime problem.I guess they’re afraid of getting targeted by the thugs.
I don’t see the problem getting better,it’s just getting progressively worse.

Unpopular opinion around here but Baton Rouge is actually a pretty cool place. You could do a lot worse.

I lived there from 1995-1998, and I agree with you it is a pretty cool place. Fast forward 30 years and we visited last year me thinking that it could be a cool city for me to retire, with all LSU sports and activities happening year round, and with the thought that maybe in 8 years or so, we can move back.

I am actually fed up living in a big city like Miami now, want to leave here, but definitely BR is not the city to move. Me trying to move back to BR was just corelating the City's current reality with nostalgia, freedom and youth from the 1990's. We had a great time there last summer but that city already had its prime and dynamic a long time ago.

BR is a shithole. Just leave and you will not regret it. You’ll actually be regretful you didn’t leave sooner.

We are doing quite well over-the-mountain thank you. Birmingham has roughly 200K citizens. Birmingham metro has 1.2 million.

Yep, in most communities it is called living on the wrong side of the tracks. Here it is the wrong side of the mountain. I’m amazed at the number of Louisiana transplants around here. A lot of them moved here after Katrina and never went back. For those considering relocating, the next time you drive up for the SEC baseball tournament, drive around Hoover, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Trussville, etc and see how nice it is. I know you hate the Crimson Tide, but be sensible. LOL

I just moved here from Baton Rouge, it took me a year to sell my house in St George. Don’t wait until it is too late. My St George neighborhood was already getting sketchy. I had to complain to the HOA several times because people in several houses started parking their cars in their front yards. Imagine trying to sell your house in a nice neighborhood and someone moves in across the street and begins parking in the front yard.

But I'm thinking I might not stay. I don't want to raise my kids, thinking every-time they go out when they are older, they are at MORE unneeded risk, than if I were in another place with less crime. It's all so depressing. Our life and home is in a pretty safe bubble. But I am growing tiresome of what's outside.

I fully intend to move in the next few years, despite my kids being in good schools here and family being here. There are so many better places. Idgaf that the food tastes better here if I have to deal with everything else that comes with it

BR has a stable economy because of LSU the state govt and all the industrial jobs. It needs to focus on crime and quality of life issues but it has a much better future than Jackson MS

The quality of government will continue to degrade much like Jackson as more people with the means to leave do so. The remaining populace will elect leaders with policies that double down on this BS. There are tons of better places to live in the US, I refuse to settle for my whole life

I don't think I've closed my garage at night once in the 10 years I've been in my current home, don't even lock our door to be honest. Stagecoach, TX.

It's stable inasmuch as you will be paid 25% less than the same job in Atlanta or Texas. Unless you're a doctor or a lawyer, where are the 150k+ jobs? Be an architect? A nurse working 110 hours a week?

Hoping for economic development in Baton Rouge is like wishing the loop was finished. It's the same shite, decade after decade, "look we brought in IBM and all these high paying jobs." Tax breaks, lofty promises, and:

The average salary for developers at IBM in Baton Rouge is around $50,134, which is below the national average.

Urban environments in the US have passed beyond redemption. Cultural degeneracy will continue the ruin

This and Obama's "war on the suburbs" has only sped this up. Virtually NO urban and large suburban area in the country is now more than a two mile radius from HUD or other subsidized housing. Where ever there are large concentrations of the dependent class you have cultural and family decay and of course crime.

Subsidized housing is also ruining small towns across america. Can't afford real rent, but can afford and 80k vehicle. It's long past time to reign in the dependent class.

A black democrat elected as district attorney will be the last nail. Hillar isn't great but watch how that race unfolds.

Not for work in industrial facilities. When I graduated from college I strongly desired to get a job in Atlanta. The engineering salaries there were a lot less than along the Louisiana / Texas gulf coast. My starting salary was about 30% higher, but I had to live in Beaumont, Texas. I can confidently say the highest engineering salaries in the southeast are actually around the Lake Charles / Beaumont area, but there is a reason why. LOL
