The cranes used to enlarge the Huey P Long bridge are parked at the Southeast corner of the bridge. I bet we see those pieces of equipment mobilized in the next few days. The truss is riveted. It will have to be fabricated off site and lifted. There is a lot more to it than building scaffolds and throwing some welders on it like typical oilfield fabrication.

The maritime operator’s liability is not limited by the Jones Act. The operator can potentially limit through the limitation of liability act, but limitation is not guaranteed. Limitation is only potentially available if the loss occurred without the privity or knowledge of the owner.

I’m ready to sign up for the class action lawsuit against the barge company for sure.

I think most people realize this. But it's also a pretty cut and dry gameplan and shouldn't take months on end to fix either.

I'd imagine a last minute emergency like this is billed as T&M, and that's what worries me. They could milk the frick out of it if that's the case.

Marquette Transportation was operating the tugboat named Kristine Alexis, which was towing the crane barge that ran into the Sunshine Bridge early Friday morning, according to U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Commander Raymond Wagner.

Friday’s crash was also not the first time a Marquette Transportation vessel hit a bridge. The company, which was founded in 1978, managed the towing vessel that hit the U.S. 80 bridge near Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 2008.

How do you hit a bridge? I mean it is literally the size of a bridge? It is not like it just jumped out of the water and magically appeared there.

Series of coincidences? Or indicative of poor management?

Nope. That is just perfect timing.

So much misinformation in this thread it’s comical.

First off they didn’t even get the name of the “push boat” correct.

Second the Kristin Alexis, not a “tug boat” and it wasn’t “towing” the barge.

Marquette is one of the biggest and oldest inland and offshore boat companies on the river, canal and GOM, this won’t phase them one bit.

These boats working in the river can lose power or sometimes lose their steering. Strong currents for boats that don’t have enough horsepower, wind, there is a number of ways accidents can happen on the river.

Not sure yet, but I can’t imagine they were traveling with the boom all the way up. The most that boom would have been would have been was 100’-120’ long. Was that the case? Where is the damage to the bridge?

Was the crane and barge working on the bridge and the boat was trying to keep the crane barge in place?

I don’t know. Most Capt’s won’t push a barge with the crane boom up. There’s more to the story.
