The new law, which takes effect on August 1, sets criminal consequences for "intentionally releasing a balloon or by organizing an event that includes a planned, intentionally release of 12 or more balloons."
Those penalties are:
First conviction: $500 fine and eight hours of community service in the form of litter abatement.
Second conviction: $900 fine and 20 hours of community service in the form of litter abatement.
Third or subsequent conviction: $2,500 fine, one-year suspension of driver's license, and 80 hours of community service in the form of litter abatement.

The new law was a result of House Bill 851, by Rep. John Illg, R- Harahan. It was approved by both houses of the legislature and was sent to the governor’s desk on May 7. It became law without his signature on May 15.
The House approved the bill on March 31 by a vote of 88-6. The Senate approved it May 5 by a vote of 32-2

A law is only good if it is enforced

Yeah, don’t see how you could even enforce this. By the time you see the balloon(s) how do you know who released them? Criminal defense lawyers finna eat

What are all of the families of the deceased future lawyers, doctors, and engineers going to do to mourn going forward???

Why wasn't this considered littering already?

When I was in elementary school, we did a balloon release thing. The school had a big U.S. map in the lunch room, and tracked all the areas the balloons were found at. My pin wound up the furthest out--found all the way in South Carolina by a park ranger. It was a really cool experience (and a cool way to indirectly teach about state and regional geography), harm to nature notwithstanding.

Just because it takes longer doesn't mean it doesn't fall on the ground or tangle up in a tree.

Most of the time the people who do this post it on social media, so it probably won’t be that difficult

There should be an age requirement to post on the OT

Surprised it hasn’t been eliminated altogether. The Cleveland balloon launch was an absolute shite show.

I think you missed his sarcasm Sal,
Also, I fish a lot and I can't count the times I've dragged a cluster of those mylar balloons out of the water. I hate the damn things. I hate litter in general. And graffitti even more.

Clearly all balloons will have to be tagged and registered. Purchasers will have their names put in a database that coincides with the balloon registration.
You wanna see some rough shite? Wait till the underground balloon market gets off and rolling. That makes the drug game look like a play day at a park- the kind of park in the good part of town with the high property taxes.
