Vet says my dog is too old to safely undergo the anesthesia that a dental cleaning would require.. Any other tried and true methods for improving his breath ? Specific brands of chews or anyhting else ?

Your dog probably has a rotten tooth, go to the vet and cry about the money you're about to spend

You're likely going to have to take him to a vet to get his teeth cleaned. Don't be surprised if they have to pull a couple. How old is he? After that, there are dog biscuits that are supposed to help with shitty dog breath. I don't know if they really work, but that is what they are advertised to do.

The same thing can happen to cats, too. An old cat I had growing up had god awful breath and ended up getting three teeth pulled.

Mine is old, fat and has horrible breath. He eats shite and mushrooms in the backyard all the time.

He is almost 11 though and the vet isn't comfortable putting him under for a teeth cleaning, so he's just a stinky breath dog.

Probably a rotten tooth or just needs a dental cleaning.
Take him to the vet.
Otherwise, I have found that the dental chew treats help a lot. Not cheap, but you can find the Kirtland brand for almost half the price at Costco.
Make sure he's getting enough water and watch what he's eating. If cats are shitting in your yard, he is probably snacking on it.

Brush their teeth, and give ‘em Bison/beef tendons to chew on. Greenies are a rip off, the tendons are way better and last longer so more economical.

It's a thing I see consistent with older dogs, and in my experience (anecdotal entirely) the legit teeth cleaning process has never affected the bad breath problem. I think it is in their gut, and I don't know a remedy. I've been around several dogs that had -uniquely- bad breath, and very powerful. Each one of them all had their respective owners get the real dental hygiene process for their dogs and man, you're talking almost 0% better.

Gotta learn to love'em through it.

if ongoing it could be bad teeth. My 13 year old just had 18 teeth removed.

My dogs breath got terrible.
One night I noticed she was eating weird.
I shined a flashlight down her throat and saw a stick wedged side-to-side at the very back of het hard palette.

I reached in and worked it loose, and it had buried deep into her gums. It honestly smelled like death.

If your dogs breath is that bad, it’s likely due to some type of infection.

Im sure he has a lot of plaque buildup.

I buy my dogs the brushing chews for treats. Milk Bone sells them. Its shaped like a bone an on both sides it has lumps in them so that when they are chewing it brushes against the back of their teeth.

Just like with humans, if you don't floss and even brush properly, food gets stuck and even if you have very small pieces of food.. Like any food you leave out for awhile it starts to smell horrible..

If your dog allows you to do so.. Use a toothbrush and make sure you get his back teeth where all of that shite builds up.

if it is a fishy smell, then he is expressing his anal glands and you have his anal juice on whatever was near his arse when it came out...
