No. I think autism, by and large, doesn't exist to the extent that we are purporting.
TD "we" or AMA "we"?
A few years ago, 1 in 88 children were being diagnosed as somewhere on the Asperger/Autism spectrum. I believe the number is now 1 in 64 or 1 in 68. I'm pretty sure it's real.
The anti-vaccination crowd cite these figures as "proof" of their argument. My gut feeling is that improved diagnostics and more children being tested is more likely the cause. When I was a child, a kid had to be profoundly impacted to be diagnosed. Kids with Asperger's were just considered to be a little bit "off" and weren't really treated any differently.

This. Looking back, I see so many kids I grew up with that today would have been diagnosed, but none of us ever were even referred to a doctor. We were just considered "weird". The most that would happen to any of these kids would be to get declared ADD/ADHD and prescribed Ritalin or some other drug to keep them still in class so they wouldn't be a "problem".

Your score was 10 out of a possible 50.
Scores in the 0-25 range indicate little or no Autistic traits.

And parents need reasons to justify their child’s behavioral problems and/or idiosyncrasies.
Some will undoubtedly use a child's diagnosis (of anything) to try to garner sympathy and/or attention. However, I bet the majority are relieved to know that they're not crazy and that their child IS wired differently.
ETA: proper tense

Your score was 33 out of a possible 50. Scores in the 33-50 range indicate significant Austistic traits (Autism).
Kind of surprised me.

Wife (no pics) is an autism therapist. Says I'm just OCD and an a-hole. I'll take her word for it.

Be honest, how many times did you have to scroll up to check the severity of agree and disagree after getting to #21?
