I haven't been following this on a daily basis, but can records be unsealed for appeals?

Evidently, yes, if this is the case.

From Claude:

quote:

No — there's no reported criminal history. Austin Metcalf was 17 when he was killed on April 2, 2025, and in Texas any juvenile records would be sealed and unavailable to the public regardless. Nothing in the extensive coverage of the case or the trial indicated a criminal record.
Worth noting: the case drew a flood of social media posts that amplified the killing in racial terms (ESPN) , and a lot of unverified claims about both teenagers circulated online during that period. Metcalf's father stated publicly that the case was not about race and was not political. (Coalitionforthemurderedandmissing) If you saw a specific claim somewhere, it most likely traces back to that viral misinformation rather than any court record.
Karmelo Anthony was convicted of murder in June 2026 and sentenced to 35 years. (NBC News) At trial his defense argued self-defense — a context where evidence of the victim's violent history would normally be raised if it existed — and no such evidence surfaced in reporting on the proceedings.

Saw that earlier... theres also apparently text message from Anthony the day of stating he had a knife and he wanted to stab someone and lick the blood off the knife.

Sounds like a lot of stuff that wasn't in the trial.

Clear cut pattern of behavior.

And nearly 20 witnesses, many being black, corroborated there were no racial slurs spoken by Metcalf or his brother at the time of the stabbing incident.

It wasn’t, I put the reason why from the official source from the courtroom in the thread I started why it was not in the original trial

It wasn’t. But keeping it out of the trial also kept Karmelo’s issues like threatening his ex girlfriend with a knife and threatening to stab someone and lick the blood off the knife out of the trial.

One is just muddying the water. The other shows intent to stab someone before the murder.

An a-hole and a murderer walked into a tent.

Only one came out.

Case closed.

KA’s defense is betting on people finding out that Metcalf being a hothead with some racist tendencies is going to sway public opinion.

But see my first point… it doesn’t matter.

Why are they relitigating this case, and why is the judge allowing it? This was an appeal on procedural errors. You don't get to introduce character evidence now. Should have done that during the trial and frick the gentleman's agreement if you thought it could save your client.

Tough titties. It's too late now.

Ehhh, we’ll see. It seems strange that Austin would be chosen as captain of his football team and be as popular and respected as he was if he had a reputation for being some violent a-hole.

I’m really glad it didn’t surface during the trial- it really would have made an impossible circus.

I also find it interesting to learn of it now… but it still boils down to a jerk and a killer. Nothing that comes out changes what happened under that tent.

Defense could theoretically have used it to bolster a claim that Austin threatened Karmelo.

Would have been risky because that would have opened the door for the prosecutor to introduce Karmelo's prior bad acts. And it still would have been an uphill climb because of the video evidence and the diverse group of witnesses who said Karmelo was the aggressor. With the texts earlier that day it would simply have meant he got lucky and targeted someone who allowed for that line of defense.

it does not matter. He could be the biggest a-hole racist wearing a confederate flag shirt. You still can't stab him.

Maybe. Seeing that one of the things spray painted was heil hitler. Not sure that makes people racist or just stupid. People older than they were say things like Hitler was right. I see a lot more direct jew hatred on this board.

And when you are a child, you do taboo things. Like stealing your dad's playboys or smoking a cigarette underage.

Seems like the kid was an a-hole.

Witnesses say he didn't deserve to die and Karmelo was a murderer, with no self-defense justification.

Assholes can be murdered too. You can't just murder assholes.

True. I’m ceding the point for a greater point though- that even if Metcalf were less than an angel, it doesn’t make a difference as to what occurred under that tent that day.
