Gotta realize that pretty much every part of the world has its' own Nomadic Culture. Europe has Gypsies, ME has Bedouins, AU has the indigenous peoples, NA had several nomadic Indian tribes, SA has indigenous peoples that never settle permanently, Africa has some wandering natives too, the Mongols in Asia.

2 different lifestyles that the world over have always looked down upon each other. The established look down on the wanderers while the wanderers look down on the settled. They are just 2 different mindsets unable to comprehend one another.

I bet you thought this sounded deep too

It’s funny reading this thread. Most of the baws posting in it are describing the problem as homeless people inconveniencing them, as if that’s the most important thing here.

I’ve spent quite a lot of time in Austin, Seattle, Portland, LA, Denver over the last couple years. Never noticed any homeless camps, a couple here and there but nowhere near the scale of what yall are saying.

Uh, I just got back from Seattle for the holidays. The camps are all over the damn place.

If anything they're worse now than ever.

That’s where it starts. Then they attack someone, stab two people, kill one, and another assaults a woman inside a restaurant.

All of which have happened in the first week of 2020 in Austin.

That is awful. Child should be taken away

I concur. But consider this. You've lost your home and your child is probably the ONLY bright spot in your life.

I would be willing to bet that there are close enough places with open beds for families (even ways to get to places outside of city with kids), but the adults choose not to go, follow rules, take medicine, not do drugs, and so on. They may have gone and gotten kicked out already which again is a choice.

Not that CPS has a great record, but it can't be worse than sleeping near a curb and crap and on streets at night. We at least eventually hear about issues with CPS, but we hear less of the children that get abused, raped, rented for $, and so on. Parents who ignore help offered to stay on streets need to have kids removed. That picture just looks like child abuse and neglect.

I can point you in the right direction in Portland, Seattle, and Denver. Very easily.

You have to be spending your time with your eyes closed in the 3 cities I mentioned.

I've been going to Portland and Seattle for 20 years. There have always been these camps and they have always been bad. I guess some people are immune to it or just choose to acknowledge the issue.

At least in N.O. lots of these "homeless" are middle class or rich kids who just want to be homeless for some reason.

Ya I was in San Jose last month and got off the light rail by a park full of homeless.

Police officer stated it had been like that since the 60s. So I suppose nothing new.

I feel like these homeless hysteria threads are like the Mandela effect or something. People on here are acting like homelessness in large US cities is a recent phenomenon. It’s been going on for decades and has been exaggerated by social media and the internet.

Homeless guy assaulted a random man at Bennuu, then ran into a Freebirds and stabbed two employees, killing one. There have also been stories of homeless men attacking female joggers on South Congress and Town Lake. And the mayor continues to push his narrative that “homeless people aren’t criminals”.

It's gotten way out of control since Adler and the stooges on the city council passed the ordinance that basically tied law enforcement's hands when dealing with homeless. Hotels and businesses are pissed because homeless are trashing downtown. Governor Abbot has asked city officials to repeal the ordinance, but they won't. Abbot told TxDOT crews to periodically remove homeless camps underneath state-owned overpasses, as the City has no jurisdiction over them. Now that a homeless man has killed someone, it will be interesting to see what the governor does.

I wonder what it would take to adopt that child.

That was a bad move on their part but they have changed a lot of that ordinance. Other cities with no-camping ordinances are experiencing stabbings and killings by homeless people too. So its not purely a matter of what an ordinance allows. Abbot can bull doze the camps but the homeless aren't going anywhere. I don't know what the answer is but its going to take a lot of money being put into affordable housing and mental health.

The picture of that child sleeping on the street is gut wrenching to me. How has the city/state not intervened there?
