Officials of Baton Rouge Community College failed to return $520,000 in federal funds on time, according to a state audit released Friday morning.

The school also improperly used student technology fees to pay for salaries and benefits for five employees, Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera said.

In addition, the school has nearly $2 million in property that cannot be located, mostly computers, according to the report.

Probably bc the administration got their degrees from community colleges.

In another area, Purpera's audit said the school incorrectly used $174,597 and $86,136 respectively to pay salaries and benefits for five employees using student technology fees.

So 5 administrators slipped a technology fee increase into the tuition, then turned around and used that money to give themselves raises. I bet someone's mistress was hired as a secretary.

Must public institutions have some “missing” property

Most of it is not actually stolen but was improperly retired (undocumented) for newer equipment

Since gov’t agencies are often underfunded, the IT inventory systems they carry are not up to snuff.

Staff turnover and administrative restructuring are often NOT communicated with the propterty custodians until the custodian comes looking for the items.

Thats another thing. Most times the items are not depreciated meaning we have no way to truly know the actual value of the lost items

The audit merely reflects the the purchase price of the items.

State law mandates that all equipment valued over $1000 when purchased must be reported to the state property inventory system. If items were not added to that system then someone not directly involved in any theft could potentially go to jail

I just graduated from there in a computer major. I wonder if I know anyone involved.

I read somewhere here that when Curley was at LSU that BRCC had the best football team in EBR Parish...

BRCC probably has 30 year old Commodores still on the inventory rolls.

Wait until they try to audit Southern. I work with a lot of these local colleges and several are about as incompetent as BRCC. Nice to see tax money pissed away for nothing.

Doubtful. If they're conducting an inventory, then they were almost certainly capitalized.
