Atlanta Airport: Why are flights so concentrated there?

I understand the functionality of hubs, and the fact that Atlanta is a big corporate city. But why does the hub have to be so large? When shite happens, it fricks with the whole system. Why not take a small percentage of Atlanta flights, and build another smaller hub in the region?

It’s Delta’s home. Everything Deta goes through Atlanta for the most part.

Delta rebooked my parents on a United flight. They are currently stuck in San Francisco.
Delta should have never closed the Memphis hub. They could have routed more traffic through there when this kind of thing happens.
They need more system redundancy in the south east US.

I know they acquired Northwest Airlines, but you’ve got hubs for Delta in Minneapolis and Detroit which aren’t that far apart. They also have one in Salt Lake, Seattle, and Los Angeles. However in the south, they only have Atlanta.

I’ve had to do this for Newark before from JFK. It wasn’t terrible but definitely a bit of a hassle.

I'm in agreement this event may make delta look at utilizing cincinatti, orlando, and detroit a bit more. With memphis basically done, only cincinatti or orlando make for decent options.

Delta has too many eggs in the Atlanta basket. They should have kept Cincy and Memphis as minor hubs.

This. I used to fly KLM into Memphis and it was a great airport to connect to.

Obviously you don’t.
Logistics and planning get experientially more complicated the more hubs you have.
Even with the problems of today, I’m willing to bet the move has saved them more money in the long run without compromising quality too much in the long run.
I’m kind of surprised though that the major transcontinental hub is there and not further north to take advantage of the shorter distance to Europe.
