re: Atlanta Airport: Why are flights so concentrated there?

Why not take a small percentage of Atlanta flights, and build another smaller hub in the region?
There's an international airport in Cobb County but it only handles small flights. Paulding County has an airport that they wanted to make into a large airport but Hartsfield-Jackson put a stop to that. Both of those airports are 45-65 minutes north of Atlanta and still in the Atlanta metro. Hartsfield likes that "busiest airport in the world" title. That, along with Delta having so much power, is why ATL will not let another airport become big.

Have a flight out of there tomorrow at 28 to 3. Will try and arrive by 1:30.

Too much risk for so much of their network to depend on one single hub.
I have been criticizing them for years about this. I guess it finally caught up to them.

Atlanta an delta, symbiotic as they are, have pistols to each others head keeping us a 1 airport city. Our geographical location is ideal for connection most of country’s population.
If Delta moves flights elsewhere, Atlanta brings more new airlines in through existing or new airport and Delta suffers from more competition.
If Atlanta ignores deltas needs and invites more airlines, then delta starts negotiating with Charlotte/Birmingham to move their hub

Someone shuts the lights off for a short time and now you want the whole flight system to change. You reactionary milinials are the worst

Indeed.
The disruption argument is moot.
Which how tightly interwoven planning is, things of a similar scale would happen to any hub.
Same thing happened last year or the year before to AA when there was a front dropping tornadoes around DFW a few days after Christmas. Disrupted everyone everywhere. While hubs do leave you more exposed to things like that, the daily benefits they give you in perpetually far outweigh the costs of that risk

You just helped make my point, unlike the other smartasses in this thread. They should have kept Memphis. It’s ridiculous how everything has to go through Atlanta.
Well, as already stated, you brought up the reason why they do it this way in your OP, then disregarded it, then asked for an explaination as to why they chose to do it this way.
To use the example brought up in the post you say thanks for proving my point:
What you mean “route” though Memphis?
What, they’ll give me a ticket to there instead of Atlanta?
What good that does that do to ANYONE?
In these hypothetical scenario, why would Memphis even have so much unused capacity to even take up a portion of Atlanta’s weight?
Hubs system work better.
But they don’t if you treat hubs like Louisiana does with 4 year colleges and put them everywhere.
That just become prohibitively expensive.

I had to fly through that airport every weekend for three months last year. They'd have to build out a lot more terminals as American turned it into their southeast US hub and they're already overwhelmed.
Besides, that place is the seventh ring of hell. I'd rather be stuck in Atlanta than have to go through that place again.

RDU and SNA are the best airports in the country IMO.

I agree. Used to fly out of there when I was stationed at Fort Bragg. When I used to work for a data storage company that has an office in Durham, I flew there a few times and loved the new terminal they recently built.

No one is going to look up your airport codes !
WHY don't you TELL us, which airports, you feel are the best ?

It is the best of the three major US airlines.

Because they were smart and did what Delta wanted them to do. Besides, ATL is geographically located in a perfect region for connections up and down the eastern seaboard, as well as East coast/West coast transcon connections.
Delta operates the biggest hub in the world at ATL, and successfully kept the city and area from opening Dekalb/Peachtree airport to commercial traffic for many years.

Delta could route stranded passengers through Memphis instead of Atlanta if Memphis was still a hub.
They depend on Atlanta too much. And that is not just some a-hole talking. I solve problems like this for a living and I fly about 90,000 miles per year with Delta.

You don't see the value of routing passengers through an operating hub when another hub is down?
They have more system redundancy in the Midwest with two large hubs. Their network is more resilient in that region because of it.

Say delta has flights to 100 cities to/from Atlanta. Each of those cities connects to all the others.
If you take some cities out then you have two groups of cities that don’t connect. If you take a portion of flights from all cities out to a new hub then pax wait longer for the next flight when bumped.
Having to deal with these rare events is probably better than having a much less flexible schedule every day

You all know why Delta is named Delta? For the city where it started and that could have been THE hub of the south.

A simple solution would be to take 1 flight a day from atlanta to your major markets (think msy) and move it to cincy, raleigh or another less utilized hub. Then you still have 11 flights a day to atlanta (instead of 12), you give your network some extra flexibility during events like this, and passengers see it as a new city or extra frequency being added. If nola to salt lake or minneapolis had a morning flight that would be great
