22 months ago I lost my mother. 14 months ago I lost the woman I loved. It was unexpected. She, too, went to bed and never woke up. I still have my elderly father to take care of, but other than that there's nothing keeping me here. I'm tired of this world and I'm ready to go any time. I want to see my Susan again.

There is always a reason to live. You have a duty to live to help other human beings in need as much as possible. I encourage you to find meaning in helping the less fortunate amongst us by contributing your time, energy, and finances to the extent possible because I promise you all of those good works will benefit you in the next life.

I was 21 working Fire Rescue EMS. I experienced from a baby, teenager and adults die. I knew it could be me any day. I changed careers and experienced a pipeline explosion in my thirties. I had a motorcycle wreck in my forties, that sucked. I was assaulted in 2019 and defended myself with a firearm. Now I'm 54 and had a myocardial infarction in October. I lost my Dad in 2014 and my sister last year. I was a pallbearer for a friend at 19. I have been well aware of death my whole life. I have accepted it.

after 50 you realize more than half your life is over.

I struggled with depression when I was younger. I honestly didnt think I was going to make it as long as I have.

Eternal life would be useless without eternal youth.
I think the idea of death is far worse when you're young and full of life and potential experiences. Death sucks because you basically miss out on future things. As you get older the number of things you are capable of doing and missing starts shrinking dramatically.
Lots of old people will tell you how ready they are. It's not that they want to die exactly, it's just they are extremely tired and worn down and future life offers absolutely no new promise.
To rephrase an old cliche, there's a difference between living and existing.

You’ll get some clarity when those close to you and your age start dying.

True, right now I have 3 people in my close circle with terminal cancer, I lost several last year. I've had several heart procedures to correct aFib, that was a side effect of having a bad fall when I broke my neck. I was lucky, a lot of pain, but no paralysis.
I'm 76, I lost both parents before I was 20, they were both 52, so I've outlived my heredity. I have seen many die peacefully, some die in agony, all we can hope for it to be quiet and easy, with loved ones around you.

Im 62 and have told my wife many times I'll be surprised if I make it to 70.
I don't lose sleep over it because I'm living a great life and have had a fantastic life. Do what we want, when we want....life has been good...but had to work for it. No free rides and nothing given to us.

The more that I think about and enjoy the little things in life, the less I think about death.

Why even worry, it's not like we can stop it...

I definitely think about it. I thought about it this morning as I was filling out paperwork for kid's college. I was wondering if anyone else could do this? I get GI Bill benefits for my child and was curious how difficult it would be for someone else to do this without me to tell them the info for the forms. Im sure they'd figure it out but it's just little things like that I think about.

Do some people just love posting depressing topics on the OT?

At what age do you really start realizing death is gonna happen in your own life?
Or when I watched Land Before Time for about the tenth time.

Reminds me of the Boomers in the office that thinks the foundry will shut down once they retire. But a week after they are gone someone has already picked up their role as extra duty without a hitch.

I turned 50 this year and really started retirement planning and I realized I am way past the midway point in my expected life
