Asking for military discounts: trashy or not?

I'm at an airport and observed the person in front of me at the little concourse shoppette place his two items on the checkout counter and ask, "This is all I need and I'll take any military discount you can give me."
She gave him 10% off but his receipt jammed. While she was replacing the receipt feeder I asked him what he did in the military. He said did logistics in the AF for 6 years and just got out.
I didn't say anything to him but it seems kinda tacky to straight up request military discounts everywhere you go, especially if you were in a non-combat field.
Your thoughts? I'm ok with military discounts on general but not sure how I feel about the aggressive ask for it.

Just as bad as LEO’s asking for discounts

Military and senior citizen discounts are stupid in my opinion. Makes zero sense.

If you’re legit in the Military or a Veteran, why not ask?

Senior citizens discounts I get. They made it this long, they deserve half off crab cakes before 6pm.

I think it's stupid and trashy.
If you wanna talk about "serving your country" shouldn't scientists and engineers in the defense industry get discounts too?
I mean those Tomahawks and F22s etc are pretty impressive. Those guys do far more for our nation than a guy in logistics.

Yeah, that's a pretty tacky way to go about it.

I think senior citizen discounts are dumb but I have no problem with military discounts. You have a problem with giving 10% to someone who signed up to fight for our country (in whatever capacity for however long)? I'm talking about active duty main branches FYI.. not that national guard shite.
FWIW both my parents were in the navy. I always joke with my dad that the hardest part about him joining the navy must've been telling his parents he was gay

Why is asking for a military discount trashy? I ask for them all the time and will continue to do so.

honestly, people who advertise it publicly usually have the most to hide
ETA: and tacky to ask, not necessarily trashy

Asking for any kind of discount is trashy.
Either you are prepared to pay the price or not.
Haggle where prices are flexible, but don't ask for charity.

Asking for any discount is weird in my opinion. Accepting a discount if offered is another thing entirely.

I'm not sure how this position can be rationally defended.
I am not entitled to ANY MILITARY DISCOUNT AT ALL. I am however, perfectly fine with people inquiring to see if one is offered since the are ENTITLED to it if the business OFFERS it.
People bitching and moaning when one is not offered is DEFINITELY trashy, though.

Would it be better if he asked about company policy?

It depends. If a business offers them, and you fit whatever the criteria is, then good for you. It is a private transaction and the business can set whatever criteria they want on it. I don't think I have ever seen a military discount distinguish combat vets from non. Its really not something that is worth getting worked up about unless someone is just straight up lying about serving. Don't waste your time worrying about it.

I think it's fine to ask if a business has any special programs. If they mention something which you're affiliated with, get the discount.

If it's a perk it's a perk. Not sure why you wouldn't take it if it's available. That would be financially irresponsible.

I was not in the military and am not a senior citizen but if someone is one of those things and they want to ask if there is a discount why is that trashy? Do you look for coupon codes before buying things online? Is that trashy? There are always things that stores offer that are not advertised, why not take advantage of said discounts if they exist?
