An old co-worker’s daughter did the theater program there. It helped her get a good scholarship to some college that churns out lots of Broadway actors. Forget what college. Last I heard she was involved in some Broadway play.
She was a normal, well rounded kid the times I was around her.

Is this one of those you live at the school type places? If not then let him go if that’s what he wants. If it is those give me bad vibes.

Our youngest daughter (no pics) was offered a scholarship to the Mississippi School of the Arts for dance. I was kind of excited about it but truthfully hadn't a clue about what went on there. Anyway, she went and spent a day there once and came back and said, "Those are the weirdest people I have ever seen. I am not going there. No way". So, now you know.

Sounds like an awesome opportunity .. contrary to what the gravy-soaked cousin-frickers on this board wall tell you, broadening one’s horizons is actually a good thing.
Fine arts is too small of a niche to specialize this early, at the expense of physics/calculus type of HS classes. If it were a STEM based education, my opinion might change, based on the amount of jobs available for engineers, programmers, scientists, etc.
Writing/acting/singing is a lot like professional sports, but even more of a crap shoot honestly.

That's awesome. Give him some support if he really wants to go. He'll never forget it.

I would get him started on Truvada now

Recent graduation class of 64 students earned over $13.9M in scholarships
Seems like a decent place to send your kid. He play sports?

Pretty sure it has a traditional curriculum in accordance with Alabama graduation requirements. Students just devote more time towards their chosen discipline.

Tell him how proud you are of him. Congratulate him. Support him

Have you toured? I took my son recently and he hated it. So did I.
Kids were dull and all masked and loving it. Place seemed very drab as well.
Plus you’d better love your art and not care about anything else. School 8-3 and then 3 hours of practice. Then 2 or 3 hours of homework. No time for sports or friends.

You should support and love your son no matter how he turns out. I mean just look at Magic Johnson and his son, they seems to have a great relationship.

This. It's not about you, OP. Have him take a tour. If he likes it and can articulate why he wants to attend, you should not only let him, but support him, be excited for him. I know more people who were fricked up by their parents trying to force them down a path they didn't want than I know people who were saved by their parents by jerking them onto a different path. Educationally speaking, before some smartass builds a drug addict strawman to knock over.

I've got him on a diving team at our pool and also have him plugged into a diving program through the Hoover Rec that is a Bham based thing
also - they have accelerated academic classes - some kids go for math and science
he is decent at the sport, but probably not a future Olympian...

I would have thought this would be higher

I hate this type of verbiage from schools. It tries to give the impression of 200k of useable college scholarships/kid. The reality is that some kids applied to 20 undergrad schools and got multiple scholarships from different schools, but they can only use one.
