Together Ascension needs to get its shite together

quote:

Without discussion Tuesday, the Ascension Parish School Board unanimously approved a decade-long property tax exemption for a potential major expansion at Shell Chemical's Geismar plant, joining the Sheriff's Office and Ascension Parish Council in signing off on the exemptions.

The School Board, which receives the largest portion of property taxes in Ascension Parish, would forgo $62.5 million in property tax revenues over the 10-year life of the exemption for the $1.2 billion expansion.

If the project lands in Geismar, the school district would receive $15.6 million in new property tax revenue from the Shell expansion over the 10 years, according to information from the parish Assessor's Office.

Not to hijack but here’s an article from today’s NY Times

School Board Says No To Big Oil

It’s a long article but includes the following:

quote:

In November, local authorities in Calcasieu Parish unanimously approved a tax break worth $2 billion over 10 years for a $15 billion liquefied natural gas facility. Eric Tarver, a car dealer who sits on the parish school board, said he feared “playing chicken” with a big company that was promising to create hundreds of jobs.

“Should we have negotiated with them? Maybe,” Mr. Tarver said. “But the benefits of them coming far outweigh the risk of haggling with them and having them go to Corpus Christi or Houston, or even Lafayette.”

Seems like everyone can see the bigger picture but Baton Rouge

So, the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge is a major player on Together Baton Rouge and they don’t care about the public schools.

Shocking.

It only works if no one plays the game with these companies.

From the article:

Well, if we’re doing so well, why are we the second-poorest state?”

It's not because Exxon got a tax break. I could name some other reasons but...

We get it over here. That’s why this place is slowly becoming one of the best places to live in Louisiana. AP is booming and growing at a steady pace

They would forgo $0 if Shell told them to keep it and build elsewhere. I’m not ready to call the APSB geniuses, mostly because it doesn’t take a genius to realize $15.6 > $0.

I honestly don't think the morons in Baton Rouge understood what hundreds of new jobs meant. They were worried about giving out tax breaks, but didn't get that those new jobs meant people with a stable income, people with very good benefits, people that could afford to start families, buy houses, and cars, and other shite that they would all pay taxes on. Taxes that would go to the local government. But all they could see was "We get to tell our ignorant-arse constituency that we "stuck it" to the man."

When in reality they screwed over their city, people, and their future.

The EBRPSS does not care about families staying in this parish. They chased most of the working middle class families out of the parish with the wonderful school system they have created.

Playing a little devil’s advocate...

Do most states, including Texas, have state wide or local control of property tax exemptions? What percentage does the Texas Exxon plant pay in property tax vs the property value? Is it similar in Louisiana?

This state needs a LOT of reform. Currently it appears we are run arse backwards from other states. So, does shifting property tax exemptions from the state level to local authorities make us closer to how other states do it?

It’s a fair question to ask, has Louisiana been too generous on local tax exemptions? The answer might be no, but it still should be asked.

This is exactly what's wrong with Louisiana. ITEP is why Louisiana stays poor despite all of its resources and strategic location.

Don't get me wrong, you need to provide some exemptions to attract business but I think we are overly generous. Many of these companies would come here exemptions or not. Especially petrochemical because again, resources and access.

Everybody from Louisiana should watch this video. It's from a shite organization and it starts out kind of sjw but they make some great points that apply to everybody in Louisiana. We're all getting fricked.

And if you think Texas does this but better, think again. I've lived in Texas. Believe me, they get their cut from these businesses.

Honest question. Was Exin’s ITEP request for a project already completed?

Horse shite! A.) That video has been posted 100 times here B.) It's propaganda.

ITEP is not the hurting the state or the reason LA stays poor.

Exxon in beaumont announces the expansion that was supposed to come to BR until TBR and the school board fricked us

Houston Ship Channel doesn't give a frick about access.

Different tax structure. The overall amount of exemptions given by Texas and Louisiana are pretty equal. What things like your video completely forget to mention are things like income taxes, corporate taxes, and inventory taxes. All of which Texas does not charge so they have to make their property tax higher. TBR realizes 99.9% of the morons who watch their video will not do any more research and believe the BS they spew. ITEPs are the only thing keeping industry in LA. They certainly are not coming to LA because of the political atmosphere, tax structure, educated workforce, infrastructure, etc.

I knew what that video was before I clicked on it. Definitely unbiased.

Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Exxon doesn’t get the tax breaks they ask for so they take their investment money elsewhere. With it goes jobs that create subsequent tax money. BR ends up with zero new tax money.

If Exxon didn’t have any other options then MAYBE you can play hardball with them and get all the tax monies, but that’s not the world that Exxon and EBR is living in. EBR is simply too stupid or politically idealistic to realize that.

That was always my question with that video and the other shite that Together Louisiana talks. When I first watched that video I kept waiting for them to address taxation between the different states outside of property tax. Louisiana is by far the lowest in the country in property taxes both industrial as well as residential and Commercial so that was no surprise to me. Unfortunately, the video Never addressed that point.

It certainly had me leaning towards it being propaganda but what really struck me was Louisiana being top five in all these industries yet still being one of the worst states to live in and one of the poorest.

Well we don't really know since no other way has ever been tried that I know of. I could be wrong but I think Louisiana has always had very generous property tax exemptions. I also think there are, at least for some industries, situations where Louisiana politicians are holding a royal flush and decide to fold instead of negotiating a better package with these corporations.

I think it's a combination of ignorance, kickbacks and catastrophe syndrome.
