I never really liked OB. He's always come across as a "holier than thou" type of person.

I do agree that he has a nice RV though.

The worst part about this ordeal for me is Neal Bourque. He's a stand up guy and one of the nicest men I've met. I don't know why KM and OB would collude to him running unopposed, to me it seems like he would've won anyway.

I'm only 25 and have spent more time in BR than AP since I first went off to college in 2009 (5 years of undergrad, 1 year working, and I'm 1 year through law school), but my family has lived on the same homestead in St. Amant for 5 generations, and I never changed my voter registration, so I still vote in AP elections.

I pay attention because I remember seeing how much the parish changed after Katrina, and I began to question why things were developing so fast, but why government seemed to lag so far behind. It didn't take much digging to figure it out, especially when in local politics, you can actually talk to the players involved and find out pretty easily. These guys don't all invoke "executive privelege" and "plead the 5th" like the professional crooks in Washington, and they're not as experienced as the side-show that is state government. They're all outgoing, friendly guys, and like to talk about what's going on and about their opposition. It's easy to figure out what's going on by just showing up, watching, and talking.

I hope that after I graduate, I can convince the Mrs. to move out there (she grew up in BR, and all her family is from Laffy) so I can start having a hand in fixing this broken parish.

Absolutely, its called bribing a public official. Doesn't matter if he was elected or not if he was officially in the running.

Do they really expect us to believe this wasn't a bribe?

Their defense is literally:

"He was just advising his friend Lawson, telling him that he wouldn't win, and that this was a bad time to be running due to Lawson's financial issues and employment issues. So, hey, Matassa gave him that money just to help out a friend and told him that he should withdraw from the race against the incombent whom Matassa backs, BUT THAT'S NOT A BRIBE!"

The attorney just admitted it was Matassa on the tapes!

Total clowns.

i mean they basically just admitted, publicly, that it was a bribe

i can't see how a loan would make that big of a difference if it was offered for political decision making

*Note: this is not a legal opinion or advice. i'm just spitballing as a citizen-taxpayer

I am not familiar with the facts, but did the guy that was allegedly "bribed" hold public office or a public position ? Or was he just some guy running for office ?
