Dry weather and high winds kick it up

Rip to anyone who bought a house out there without doing any research

I am not familiar with bauxite but that can't be healthy. Should they not be keeping moisture on it to keep the dust down?

Definitely won't help the resale.

I work with about 4/5 people who live out there and bitch about it once a month.

It's not a carcinogen. There used to be huge stockpiles of it off of Sherwood Blvd for many many years. It's the ore for alumina which is used to make aluminum.

Some would consider this to be environmental racism if there was low-income housing nearby, but it’s middle class housing, so carry on.

It would be white if that was the case.

No, you are thinking of the gypsum pond. OP is showing the Almatis bauxite mud lake that’s off of hwy 22 in Darrow/Sorrento. Not far from Pelican Point.

That's not AP. That's North Iberville.

Yeah that plant has been there since the late 1950's, opening and closing throughout the years depending upon the demand for and current price of aluminum.

I knew when Pelican Point was built that the residents would have that kind of reaction to living so near an operating Aluminum plant. On the right day everything is dusted orange, anyone from the area should have observed and already known this.

It kind of reminds me of all the people who bought land on Hwy. 22 in Ascension Parish near the landfill at Sorrento and now complain because the area near where they live smells like shite. Did they expect the smell to vanish because they moved there ?

Maintained those ponds many moons ago. Some were very caustic. Some were neutral and ducks would land in them. The old white plant truck we used was red from all the dust, and extremely rusty from the caustic mud. Catching samples up there I could see houses and subdivisions being built and I just shook my head.

It's totally worth it, if for the ITEP exemptions alone.

Just living your life increases your chance for cancer. If you don't get it by the time you are 50 , you will by 60 or 70 or 80.

Of course just living your life statistically increases the chances for anything to possibly happen to you .

However, just because one hasn't contracted cancer at 50 years old, doesn't necessarily mean that they will or won't (at 60-80) decades later in life.

Idiots keep building next to industrial areas and then bitch. Like the ones who built next to the landfill in the Prairieville area and then complained about the smell 15 years ago.

And now that they switched the bulk terminal to coal handling, depending on wind direction you get a nice black overlay as well.
