Is this just because the conference was in Vegas? Where a very large percent of national conferences are held due to many convenient factors?

$10K on a conference is nothing compared to their annual budget, and they have money set aside just for this type of expense.

I doubt any conference Louisiana could put on would be a % of the knowledge and quality others can bring to a national conference.

By all means, lets not keep our poor education and leadership system suffering even more by restricting our leaders from learning from others outside of this state. This is just a story to flame, I see nothing wrong.

Seriously? Six rooms at Cesar’s Palace? frick those guys. I don’t have a problem with them going to a convention, but that’s beyond reasonable.

Here’s the parts that make my blood boil:
1. It was a conference about leadership. Matassa has one foot out the door. Why the frick is he wasting tax money on going to something like that?
2. If his presence was not needed, then why the frick do we need a Parish President in the first place? That’s a waste of tax dollars.
3. This piece of shite got off on some shady technicality that video footage is not sufficient for evidence. Yet it’s perfectly fine in other instances. And then he is going to turn around double frick you the citizens by suing us for legal fees.

Seriously, frick this scumbag and whoever supports him.

[Now the 11 guests part is the part where I think they could get into trouble depending on who paid what and where.]

I would assume their spouses went with most of them. As long as spouses expenses (airfare/meals) are not included in the expenses, who cares if they stayed in the rooms?

The conferences are what you make of them. Sorry you didn’t take advantage of the opportunity and just signed in and left to get your kickbacks.

10K for 11 people in Vegas isn't THAT crazy.
It's not like they are going to be sharing rooms.

There wasn’t really an emergency, and even if there was, what more could be accomplished by him physically being there? He’s not getting out there to fill sandbags

Didn’t he say it was an emergency?

Didn’t we see the governor, several other parish leaders, and various key personnel from various players taking a leadership roll prior to and during the “emergency”? Weren’t these people out front communicating with their constituents throughout?

Mstassa messed up. He’d have to show me that going to Vegas with all those key officials was critical, or I’m thinking he just left to party.

Didnt know this organization existed and on the surface seems like it would be beneficial to AP. But, my problem is that Mataasa is not running for reelection, so why in the hell did he feel the need to go? I can understand sending employees to network.

It’s my impression that Matassa endorses Painter. He’s in that same circle.

I guess he taught the conference goers that declaring a state of emergency for your constituents and then bailing out to Vegas is an acceptable practice. I wonder how many conference attendees would have done that in the same instance?

Matassa is an idiot for leaving in front of the storm. If anything wasnt reimbursible, you send 2nd in command on the trip and stay for your people.

I'd love to see how attending this conference benefited the residents of Ascension...

I'd be in favor of a state law banning elected officials attending out of state conferences.

Im not saying Matassa isnt a crook or any politician is an angel. However not all conferences are the same. Some are extremely beneficial. There is opportunity for educating the very dumb idiotic goverment organizers we complain about.

Ive been to NACo events and one of them was helping with grant proposals and writing to help win Federal municipal grants. Up to 80% of road widenings, bridge repair, sewer system upgrades, water treatment facility improvements, etc come from Federal grants. In my opinion, government grants are one of the underutilized parts of local governments. Its similar to college scholarships and grants where there are obscure or unheard about oppurtinities for free tuition.

For this "investigation", I would be more concerned with guests and level of travel, . 6 rooms for 11 guests tells me they didnt go all out. I think a company paying for employees travel (not first class), hotel (not suite) and meals (not 5 star) is completely reasonable. Spouses should pay their own travel. Obviously leisure should be out of pocket too.

An “emergency” is different than an actual emergency. If I’m not mistaken, the emergency declaration is something that has to be done to qualify for certain relief funding

The fact that Jeff Wiley didn't run Matassa's arse out on a rail when he had him dead to rights in that bribery scheme greatly disappoints me.

I expected better from him. Good thing he's no longer the Sheriff of Ascension Parish.

No, it doesn't. But don't most hotels have 2 separate beds? Should've had 3 hotel rooms for the 6 people attending the conference. But being that they said it was 6 hotel rooms for 11 people makes me think the officials took advantage of tax money paying for the hotel rooms and wanted private rooms so they could bring their spouses along.
