WAFB’s Scottie Hunter requested a copy of those records which reveal Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa and other leaders racked up more than $10,000 in charges for registrations fees and hotel rooms.
According to parish records, Matassa was joined in Sin City by chief administrative officer Ken Dawson, chief executive administrator Kemlyn Bailey-Lomas, parish finance director Christy Burnett, facilities director Thomas Pearce, purchasing director Joan Shivers and Parish councilman Oliver Joseph. Parish councilman Randy Clouatre was supposed to attend but dropped out at the last minute.
Records obtained by WAFB show only six conference registrations at $490 each were paid for by parish government. Those same records show the parish made 6 room reservations at the Caesar’s Palace hotel with a total of 11 guests.
quote:

"I just cannot fathom how anybody can declare a state of emergency for the entire Parish of Ascension and then step on a plane and go to a conference in Las Vegas," said Satterlee.
The prices reflected in this report do not include everything that was spent. Officials who took the trip also have time to turn in expense reports for reimbursements for other expenses, including meals purchased while on the trip. These Baws got some explaining to do

If they had already put in 10k on (likely non-refundable) trip expenses, seems like staying home would be a bigger problem.

There wasn’t really an emergency, and even if there was, what more could be accomplished by him physically being there? He’s not getting out there to fill sandbags

Typical Donaldsonville good ole boys system at the head of the table in this parish. This is what happens when Donaldsonville guys are given power. They’re worse than Chicago politicians. Y’all watch and see if anything changes if Painter wins. NOTHING will change if he wins. Anyone and everyone in Donaldsonville who has money is in Murphy Painter’s back pocket. He’s going to be held hostage by them.

To be fair, Cointment will have the east bank in his back pocket so it just becomes a question of who do you want influencing the new leadership. I, for one, am tired of a Donaldsonville having such a large influence in the entire parish’s going’s on.

$10k for six people to go to Vegas and attend a conference?

Doesn’t seem that crazy.

Thank god there are some here that still have common sense.

6 flights, 6 hotel rooms, 6 badges to the conference.

The paper clearly says they each only get a $75 per diem for meals. It's Las Vegas, they were not eating like kings on $75 per day.

I'd love to see how attending this conference benefited the residents of Ascension...

I'd be in favor of a state law banning elected officials attending out of state conferences.

This doesn't really sound like a lot considering it was a widely attended conference in Vegas. Conference registration and 6 rooms for 4-5 nights is probably close to 10k by itself.

Now the 11 guests part is the part where I think they could get into trouble depending on who paid what and where.

Opinions like this from moronic voters are why we have the most corrupt leaders in America in this state.

First off, I doubt it was non-refundable for the hotel portion. Caesars allows cancellations for emergencies and the drop in the bucket to them cash-wise would certainly lead to them allowing such.

These conferences are never anything more than an excuse to take a trip on taxpayer expense which help the politicians more than the taxpayers. The portions of the conference they will claim to be a benefit are often the sessions where folks sign in and leave so a speaker is talking to an almost empty room. I have been to these conferences on the sales side. What they are is a way for potential contractors to wine and dine and set up kickbacks for politicians who have taxpayer money to spend.

This just proves Manassa and his ilk are as much on the opposite side of good government as "Sandbags" Cantrell in New Orleans.

As to what could be accomplished by him being there? Only someone totally vapid as to the defining characteristics of a good leader would question that.

Must be too many plant baws and fast food workers to get upset about this. Professionals should attend conferences to see how issues are being handled around the country/world and to collaborate for solutions. They should not learn everything they can from those directly around them. That’s how nothing changes.
