Actually...places like Mexico have higher vaccination rates than the U.S. Kids there HAVE to be vaccinated in order to even go to school there.

What about Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and other countries south?

In 2018 there were 349 cases all year. We are only 4 months into 2019 and there are 764 cases. We are clearly having a spike.

Exactly. The anti-vaccination people clearly bear part of the blame. But anyone who can't see that this massive influx of poor, third worlders pouring into our country isn't contributing to this and other diseases is just willfully ignorant.

I'd contend that those immune to the vaccination is a smaller number than the ever growing pod of anti-vaxxers.

That depends on the effectiveness of vaccines and second (adult) vaccination rates. Vaccines historically have been 85-90% effective. The rate of anti-vaxxers is less 5% nationwide. Vaccines are now believed to be 97% effective. But that doesn’t mean the old people are going and getting a second vaccination. It’s difficult to know if they need it or not

I don't see the BFD. When I was a kid many/most of us (including me) had the measles. It was No Big Deal. I don't understand all the hand-wringing.

A spike of runny noses and fevers. So what? Wake me up when the fallout from the spike matches the hair-on-fire threads. When did measles become ebola?

I can control how close i get to a wood chipper. I can't control how close i get to an anti-vaxxer if i don't know they aren't vaccinated.

Do you seriously think people pouring in from all over the world, most of whom we have no info on, are NOT bringing diseases with them? I'm genuinely curious. Vaccination by the hipster, granola parents would certainly help. But, your question makes it seem like you want to lay the blame solely at their feet.

I think if an infected population enters an immune population, the immune population should do ok.

I do not have any information on how many of the confirmed cases are immigrants. If you do, post it.

Snopes says you are wrong, by the way.

quote:

The epidemiology of many of these outbreaks has been researched by the CDC, which concluded that “these outbreaks are linked to travelers who brought measles back from other countries such as Israel, Ukraine, and the Philippines, where large measles outbreaks are occurring.”

LINK

The biggest outbreak worldwide is in Israel.

quote:

Israel currently is experiencing a measles outbreak that vastly outpaces that experienced in the U.S. in 2019. As reported in the Daily Beast, Israel has seen diagnosed cases of measles “soar from about 30 in the year 2017-2018 to almost 4,000 in the year 2018-2019.”

I guess I was previously unaware of the Central Americans and Mexicans pouring across the Israeli border and bringing the measles with them.

Go figure.

I think you should only go in public with a dust mask at minimum. If you really care about the children, this is the only way.

They have vaccination rates equal or even higher to the U.S.

People in third world countries don’t refuse vaccines for their kids like idiotic white women in the U.S. who think Dr Google is more informative than the CDC. They are grateful for something that can help protect their child.

ETA: I’m not saying that illegal immigrants are not part of what is causing this outbreak. Just warning people not to accept the narrative that the anti vaxx morons are trying to push onto the public. Anti vaxxers want people to believe it’s all the immigrant’s fault.

I believe it is a perfect storm of reasons that has resulted in the current situation.

Interestingly enough they try to pin the Rockland County, NY cases on anti-vaxxers while giving clear reasons why they are contracting it (travel to Israel) and leaving out certain information about the patients (a large number belong to a particular ethnic group). As dumb as anti-vaxxers are, the hate aimed at them by the media is disproportionate to their actual influence, and is classic misdirection.

bullshite... I get it you don't like anti vaxxers but these outbreaks have more to do with illegals coming here. My wife teaches in Munich was vacinated and ended up getting it a few years ago with the refugee explosion into Germany. You can't sit there and tell me these third world countries have vaccination rates as high as the US or Western Europe.

And if we’re going to throw around racial and ethnic accusations I’d like to just point out that if white women disappeared tomorrow so would the anti-vax movement

No, I am not... Have you been to a third world country? Not a pretty sight and many of the rural areas have a hard time getting clean water much less having proper medical facilities.

What about central American countries though? EL Salvador doesn't, and Guatamala doesnt. I'm not sure if they are third world or not,but Costa Rica does have a higher rate than the U.S. By comparison Israel, a first works country and one that is mentioned in the link, has a 98% vaccination rate, but still experienced an outbreak.
