Measles cases continue record climb, reaching 764 in 23 states
USA Today
The number of confirmed U.S. measles cases this year has climbed to 764, more than double the number a year ago and the highest total in 25 years, federal health officials announced Monday.
Sixty additional cases were reported last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Most of those were in New York City and its suburbs.

Primary symptoms of the disease include fever, runny nose, cough and a rash that can spread across the entire body, the CDC said. Some people can develop pneumonia, swelling of the brain or other serious symptoms. Measles can cause men to become sterile and pregnant women to deliver prematurely.
The disease is highly contagious, but the vaccination is 97% effective, the CDC says.

In some areas, NYC is mandating vaccinations under threat of a $1000 fine.

New York City Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot said last month the outbreak was "driven by a small group of anti-vaxxers" in the targeted neighborhoods.
"They have been spreading dangerous misinformation based on fake science,” she said. “We stand with the majority of people in this community who have worked hard to protect their children and those at risk."
Other states reporting cases include Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee and Washington.

This is a serious question. Do you think we would have a measles outbreak if we had higher vaccination rates?
The narrative now is that hipster, granola parents refusing to have kids vaccinated has lowered the herd immunity. So you think that’s right? I’m genuinely curious.

By new you mean old eradicated diseases.

Actually...places like Mexico have higher vaccination rates than the U.S. Kids there HAVE to be vaccinated in order to even go to school there. No vaccinations...kids don't go to school. No waivers, no religious exemption bullshite like we allow in our country. No vaccines...no school.
Also...such as the outbreaks going on in New York...many of those are because of unvaccinated Americans traveling out of the country to areas that have measles outbreaks and then traveling back to the U.S. and spreading it around.

You are mixing it up.
Vaccines cause Adults, not Autism.

I should have phrased it better.

What about the other Central American countries from which many of the immigrants originate?
Also, is there evidence that supports the idea of unvaccinated parents traveling? Not being contentious. Just curious.

Measles spreading is partially due to unvaccinated children. But the real issue is the source of the illness: illegal immigrants

And even admitting that illegal immigrants aren’t just from South America or Central America, they’re from the Middle East and Africa

ICE health officials have been notified of 236 confirmed or probable cases of mumps among detainees in 51 facilities in the past 12 months, compared to no cases detected between January 2016 and February 2018. Last year, 423 detainees were determined to have influenza and 461 to have chicken pox. All three diseases are largely preventable by vaccine.

As of March 7, a total of 2,287 detainees were quarantined around the country, ICE spokesman Brendan Raedy told Reuters.
quote:
On Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told reporters that changing demographics on the southwest border, with more immigrants from Central America traveling long distances, overwhelmed border officials and raised health concerns. "We are seeing migrants arrive with illnesses and medical conditions in unprecedented numbers," McAleenan said at a press conference.
And even admitting that illegal immigrants aren’t just from South America or Central America, they’re from the Middle East and Africa

ICE detainees come from countries all over the world, with varying degrees of vaccination coverage.

No. Measles had been all but eliminated in this country 15-20 years ago. Then the anti-vaxxer movement started, entirely based on pseudo-science and paranoia.

It is right. There has been some impact from immigration as well, mainly from African nations with low immunization rates. Mexico and most Central American countries have higher vaccination rates than the US.

1. Not all illegals are Mexican. Many are not even from South anerica or Central America.
2. Most of the places where these people come from do not have clean food, water, or sanitary conditions. These diseases are far more likely to spread there. The ones that don’t get vaccinated have a much higher risk of disease than people in the US. And they know we have free medical care, so they come here if they are poor and sick
3. Vaccination rates have increased recently. But that doesn’t mean previous generations are vaccinated at the same rate. That’s not reported by the CDC or UN statistics
4. It’s proven that people with medical need are more likely to be taken into the US and brought to medical care instead of detention facilities, if they come to the border. Many of these people could be purposely trying to become infected to have greater success at the border

From the article linked by the poster below your post...

However, vaccination rates in the countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are above 90 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
U.S. is barely 91% for certain vaccines(and that is the highest number...they are lower for others)

You know, if these crackpot moms saw stories of 764 car seat injuries, McDonalds's Happy Meal toy chokings or even rash by some new soap they would mount a new colored ribbon campaign in record time. Hard not to loathe these women quite honestly.

You are falling right into where the idiotic anti vaxxers want you to be if you think the measles outbreak is all because of illegal immigrants.
