Not to defend this person but bad weather was rolling through. Everyone knew that would happen days in advance. You don't need the government to hold your hand every step of the way

What a stupid take. This is exactly the kind of thing our tax dollars should go towards. We don't need a community organization to keep a watch tower for spotting tornados. Use the technology available, hire people to run it, and execute for people's safety.

I hear what you're saying, But here's the deal. It's like Ron White's "Put on the damn helmet bit." Advanced warnings are "Get a damn helmet." When the sirens go off it's "Put on the damn helmet..."
People should be prepared to take care of themselves in an emergency situation. But it shouldn't be beyond the realm of expectation for the gov to let us know when there might be an emergency situation. That's not being dependent on the government. That's the government letting you make informed decisions and you deciding what to do with the information..

this.
Too many people think that the gov is going to save them from everything. When in reality, gov employees are largely inept.
I've turned off all alerts on my phone and don't bother with a weather radio. The siren system in my county has failed and I'm glad for it. I hope they don't fund the repairs for the stupid thing.

I would have guessed these sirens were automatic. Tied to a NOAA system or some national alert system.

its criminal that this wasnt on some type of scada system to be able to turn this on remotely. this isnt 1950, nobody should have to press a button to sound an alarm.

As someone who lives in a tornado prone area, you don’t know what you’re talking about. There’s a difference between bad weather and a tornado. People are prepared for bad weather and most are prepared in the event of a tornado. But it’s important to know when there’s an actual tornado on the ground in your specific area.
Tornados aren’t like hurricanes where the entire city is aware of the hazard days in advance. Tornados spin up quickly and anywhere and the path it takes doesn’t cover the entire city. Sirens go off in specific areas when a tornado has been spotted and that specific area is in its immediate path. Most people don’t have a straight line to storm spotters or meteorologists so the sirens are an important warning for people in immediate danger.

I could care less if it pisses people off, but so much Democratic dysfunction has completely destroyed STL. proper, they haven’t had anything but the Democratic machine running the city in over 60 years.
This follows a winter in which they had not 1 but 2 snow storms that completely shut down the city, not because they were blizzards nor double digit snow accumulations…they never even deployed the trucks and plows in the first place.
The state has had to actively take over the STL. Metropolitan police department and this is after the state having to take over the city’s attorney office as well.
The reason we have the mayor we do now is because of those snow storms. The complete frick up around those basically helped us rid the city government of the 2nd generation parasitic leach who was only interested in using the city as her personal piggybank, continuing the family tradition started by her dad.
Cara Spencer still sucks, but she's actively turning over rocks and highlighting problems. That at least tells me she wants to improve the city. I agree with nearly none of her political stances. But I also want the city to improve.
There are a lot of things that have been going wrong around here. There is some tepid hope that the new mayor (only been in office for about a month) actually has a chance to make things better.

As someone that lives about 2 miles south of where the tornado hit, I can tell you we had a lot of warning on the news and through the city's emergency text system. We prepped for the hail we thought was coming.
The tornado swept through so fast that literally the only move was to go to the basement. I saw the light change outside and felt the pressure drop. It's such an eerie feeling I knew something bad was coming. And then about 5 minutes later it was already through.
