My dentist is a “dentist”, I address him as Dr. ——-, which is the traditional title.

I address anyone with a PhD as Dr in a professional setting even if I am friends with them. It is just showing respect for their position, something that is lacking in many areas of society today. I do agree that with so many allied health fields conferring doctorates such as pharmacy and physical therapy the situation has gotten cloudy.

interesting comments.....
i call him by first name and say going to the dentist....but i can see your point as you can be a praticing general doctor after med school and no residency.... (just not my doctor...)

i call my doctor "doc"

other comments....

what do you call your pharmacist...??

and btw it is harder to get into vet school than med school..there are only 30 (?) in the us and not even one in each state...they know if they have more everyone would want to be one and it would drive down the salary and charges...

Call mine dr. Also, have you ever caught one of your hygienists getting smashed in the chair? I may or may not have a fantasy and I'd like to know if it's even in the realm of possibilities.

I rarely call any doctor a doctor. If they want me to show them respect for the degree then they need to call me Master for my degree. Plus after putting mercury fillings in mouths for years and not knowing about the importance of the microbiome of the mouth I concluded they just work for acute issues and volume and not about the long term health of clients.

If I was inclined to go to med school, I would have been a dentist as opposed to a MD. It seems like most dentists have normal hours, don't deal with as much bullshite and still make great money.

Exactly why I did it. My bro is a neurosurgeon, and (besides his $$$$) I wouldn't want his life. Regular hours, can take off anytime I want (even though my boss is an a-hole), good living.

I'm actually in the market for a new dentist actually. Well.. Not really a dentist, but a hygienist who is: 1. Fast. 2. Doesn't try to talk to me, pausing to wait for my answers, while cleaning my teeth.

3. Is well-endowed.

Not sure what you mean? I considered my PhD professors doctors and I consider my DDS a doctor. I do not consider either a physician. It's oral surgeons who sit between the two. But I love them all!

Edit:
I am not sure what to think about a podiatrist through. And an optometrist, not the same!

They're dentists.

I understand they're technically doctors of dentistry, but I call mine a dentist.

A doctor in the same way my Philosophy professor was a doctor. Attaining the highest degree of education in his/her field. I tend to think of doctor as the way we use it colloquially to refer to one who was received an MD. Not sure about OD.

Yes a dentist is a doctor. They are exactly what it says They are a doctor of dentistry medicine. I would
Be more likely to agree with a dermatologist not being a doctor if someone wanted to argue that.

A couple at our church are pretty proud of their dentist.Their family Dr.heard a murmur on their 6 year old, said she didn’t think it was anything to worry about.
The kid has to have dental work, dentist listens with stethoscope and also hears the murmur. He insists child be cleared by cardiologist before he works on him.Turns out kid has anamolous take off of his L coronary artery, was coming off R coronary artery instead of aorta as it should have.
Has surgery at Oschners and has the defect repaired.Kid might have dropped dead at some point if not for a consciencitis dentist.
That’s what killed Pete Maravich.

I call my Dentist Dr. And honestly don't care what he calls me. What I hate is if I have a patient who is a Dentist, Chiropractor, PhD, or MD who says I'm Dr ____
