An Arkansas sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot a teenager during a traffic stop has been fired after the sheriff said he did not activate his body camera until after the shooting took place.

Oh damn, that's not good. When this first happened I had heard from a buddy in ASP that it wasn't as cut and dry as the family was making it out to be and the video would help the officer's case, but it sounds like that was just rumors now. I haven't asked him about this incident since then, don't know if there was a dash cam that may have caught it instead.

A lot of departments around the country are going to body cams that automatically record 100% of the time an officer is outside of his unit, i suspect this will be the case in all departments in AR soon.

I'll be curious to see if the officer's dashcam caught everything, and what it looks like. As of right now, it's not looking good for the officer at all.

this "boot camp" is where the military mindset of "shoot first, ask questions later" is instilled. They actually need to move away from this nonsense.

One of the more insightful comments I have seen on the OT actually. Boot Camp is designed to break an individual down and teach unquestioning obedience. I.E. Charge that machine gun nest! Yes Sir!

Police should be thoughtful, responsible and independent thinkers. Their training should be like college. Show up at this time, with these things and participate in learning, ask questions and make decisions. If someone can't do that, then they shouldn't be a police officer. It would be awesome to weed out the dudes who aren't responsible enough to be on time and to bring what they are told to bring. If they can't pass basic intelligently written tests that include decision-making skills, they shouldn't be the police.

You don't have to be an academic wizard to be a police. But you should be able to think on your feet and display common sense.

That’d be great. Just what we need is cops letting mental derelicts tell them how to think and act

Read my post. The training should be like college in FORMAT, not in curriculum or instructors.

Grandfather killed his brother and then cops shot him across the street from my house when I was a kid.

I’m ready for the whole story to come out.

They should have a boot camp similar to military and it should pay 60k a year. Yeah I know it’s gonna piss some of you off to pay more taxes

If we stopped spending money on harassing soccer moms, no-knock warrants for non-violent crimes, searching teenagers for pot, and all of the thousand other wastes of resources then we coule probably accomplish all of what you suggest - better pay, better training, etc. - AND cut taxes.

And those body cams will probably have a mute button, too. As police accountability increases due to body cam footage, some officers have started muting their cameras when talking to other officers on scene.

The good news is that conversations are captured on the cameras of other officers but it’s not always easy to obtain the footage.

Some try to figure a way the person deserved to be shot, some try to figure a way the officer is a cold blooded murderer. Nobody waits for the facts to come out before taking a side anymore. Everything is instant judgement and then scroll on to the next story so we can judge that one and then forget about it.

Up through the 80s, cops wore funny uniforms, had 6 shot revolvers and many were fat and out of shape.

With the rise of the gulf wars and increased terrorist threats, the military's budgets increased and they up graded equipment. Eventually military equipment starting flowing down to LE, couple that with increased LE budges and many combat veterans filling LE positions and you have an increased "militarization" of LE. Also the proliferation of 20 round semi automatic handguns, may make an officer more likely to fire his/her weapon compared to the days when an officer carried a wheel gun. He/she only had six shots and it was a pain to reload, so more likely to resolve continuous situations via other means.

Additionally I believe Obama had the perfect platform to tell people not to resist LE and "sue them in the morning" if an individual felt his/her rights were infringed. Obviously he didn't do that.

He and his black AGs really could have done this with blacks and saved lives and stopped some riots and other lives destroyed, but he and Holder actually used them to distract along with used as part of playing race card or just race when he got criticized which he said he wouldn’t do before he took office.

Blacks were worse off with jobs after 8 years of Obama, and blm riots & violence (including that period when cops were almost being hunted) and anthem kneelers started during his presidency. Obama did more with his pen and phone for illegals than black citizens (except maybe his body man Reggie Love on their private beach walks reporters were not allowed to see).

A former Lonoke County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a white teenager whose death has drawn the attention of civil rights activists nationally.

A special prosecutor on Friday announced the felony charge against former sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Michael Davis in the fatal shooting of Hunter Brittain (pictured below).

Davis shot Brittain during a traffic stop on June 23.

Davis, who is white, was fired in July for not turning on his body camera until the shooting occurred. The arrest affidavit says Davis told investigators he shot Brittain after the teen reached into the back of his truck and did not comply with his commands to show his hands.

Brittain was eulogized by the Rev. Al Sharpton and attorneys for George Floyd’s family.
