Still think U571 was the best sub historical event. Still love that movie

Go to the U-505 museum at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

I just found this on some Argentine news site:
shite

Despite the fact that in the last few hours several media had reported that a "heat spot" had been detected that could indicate the whereabouts of the missing Argentine submarine, Captain Enrique Balbi has indicated that "there is no trace of ARA San Juan"

Bump...
Now presumed to be sunk with all lives lost.
Still a lot of dots to connect though, if taking a little bit of water in through the snorkel caused a battery fire every sub that ever existed would be sitting at the bottom of the ocean.

On Monday, before the leaked document was broadcast, Captain Enrique Balbi, the Navy spokesperson, told a press briefing that the sub had reported “the entry of water through the snorkel, a short circuit and the beginnings of a fire, which for us is smoke without flames. It was corrected, they isolated the battery and navigated with another circuit, it was being propelled with the circuit of the stern”.

Who even knew Argentina had a Navy, let alone a submarine?

I'm sure terd and other bubbleheads can agree with me when I assume that their training program is nowhere near par with the US Navy's. A small incident can quickly turn deadly if there are incompetent operators.
Was hoping the best for them. Now they'll be on eternal patrol

I'm almost certain this was a "yard goof" related to their recent battery replacement. It appears it was done "on the cheap"
Unfortunately, the crew of the San Juan are not the first and won't be the last crew to perish due to shipyard related dumbassery

Not sealing up the cable trays into/out of the battery wells might do it. I wouldn't think the main bus cables pass anywhere near snorkel mast drains to but I don't know the layout of the sub. Maybe some instrument cables or lighting cables share a tray between the battery wells and the sump for the snorkel mast?

Nothing made my butt clench like seeing a ton of water pour into the sump, hear the head valve shut, and feel the viewing window suck inward. Talk about some popping ears too. Thank goodness for LPEs, we never had to ventilate much anymore

The most "dangerous" situation I experienced in my coner days was when we overfilled the sump and water backchanneld up the snorkel and into the ventilation room.
Imagine filling the ventilation compartment with 3' of water. Swamping blowers and turning them into pumps distributing seawater through the heating/AC ducts all over the ship.
One junior sailor earned a Navy Commendation Medal for his quick thinking to shut the battery well ducts and access hatch prior to seawater making it into the battery well.
Had he not closed the valve and hatch, we would have had chlorine gas in the forward compartment.

A diesel-electric sub has no choice but to snorkel daily too (probably daily? maybe more if they restocked that thing with cheap batteries).

Yikes, yeah that's worse than what we ever had. We had an O2 generator that barely worked, so we spent our share of time ventilating.

Reminds me of that Thomas Dolby song, One of our Submarines is Missing.
Anyone else recall that one?

They have found the sub

Argentina's navy announced early Saturday that searchers had found the missing submarine ARA San Juan deep in the Atlantic a year after it disappeared with 44 crewmen aboard.
quote:
The vessel was detected more than 2,600 feet deep in waters off the Valdes Peninsula in Argentine Patagonia, the statement said.
quote:
The discovery was announced just two days after families of the missing sailors held a commemoration one year after the sub disappeared on Nov. 15, 2017.

Argentina has a submarine in its navy?
They got a huge shipment of U-Boats in 1945.
