Reports are trickling out this morning that the sub may have been found by US Navy aircraft. If this is true and they are able to get to them in time, this would be an amazing story.

The missing Argentine submarine may have been located early this morning, after a US Navy aircraft allegedly detected a 'heat stain' from 230ft below the surface, some 185miles from the coast, and a rescue vessel separately reported hearing a sonar signal.

I forgot I made this thread. These guys still alive?

Entirely possible if their oxygen supply hasn't run out. I'm hoping this is true and they have located the sub. Some submarines have salvage air lines or other connections where oxygen lines can be connected externally and fresh air pumped in while they figure out how to do the rescue. It seems like a long shot but I'm holding out hope for a rescue.

I think I saw on the tv news when I made this thread that they thought the crew only had maybe 10-12 hours of oxygen left. That was like 3 or 4 days ago. Here's hoping though.

I've been seeing 7-10 days worth of oxygen possible... this is day 7

Well I hope you're right. That'd be a shitty way to go. Also if we save them it'll make a cool movie.

You're #1. But I suspect that when I die, the people that show up, people that actually did something other than troll around underwater, jacking off in their racks, will have something to say about it. But, I'll keep you posted with some updates and whatnot.

Do they not have the escape suits like our subs do or are they too deep?

No clue

Escape is entirely possible at 230ft... unless this sub doesn't have an escape trunk. Our boats have escape trunks where you go in, flood up, open the outer door, and get out. Then people inside can drain the trunk, send in the next group and repeat until everyone is out.
Without an escape trunk you'd have to flood the entire sub to equalize with sea pressure to open the hatch and get out... which wouldn't really work to save an entire crew.

230 ft is shallow enough to escape. Like Terd said hopefully they have (functioning) salvage air connections to tie into. Hopefully the reason no one has tried it yet is that there is still a comfortable supply of O2 on board.
Oxygen supply also depends on what originally happened to the ship (worst case, a fire consumed a good chunk of the oxygen to begin with).
In addition to the free air in the hull, hopefully they have some candles. If not, hopefully they have a way to bleed the instrument air tanks inboard and try to squeeze a little more life out that way.
Still really concerned that the boat, and her emergency systems, were neglected and not well maintained.

They would have to off gas that deep too or their lungs would explode on the way up right?

This submarine talk led me back to thinking about the Kursk.
Since we seem to have knowledgeable people's on the subject here, what happened with that?

Yeah you exhale on the way up... wouldn't take long at 230 ft. I'm guessing they have something similar to our SEIE suits or the old Steinke hood.

Torpedo malfunction sank her. Several navies offered to help with rescue and Russia refused. When they brought her up they found that 20-something men were still alive after she went down. At least some of them could have possibly been rescued had Russia allowed foreign navies to assist.

There was an explosion involving a dummy torpedo. The fire caused other warheads to explode.
I believe most of the crew was killed in this portion of the disaster.
The survivors took refuge in an undamaged compartment. Another explosion took away all the remaining oxygen. The survivors then died.
