Yes I am better off than my parents, who were firmly middle class my entire life.

Yes, my kids will be better off than we will due to our investments in them and life insurance regardless what they decide to do. Control what you can control

I think my parents were better off than me because I've spent my entire 20s paying off debt from college and a couple of mistakes (buying a new car). I think eventually I will be better off than they were, at least that's the plan

This is very true. If I lived in a similar house to the one I grew up in or better yet the size my grandparents had I’d be living like a king. One car, a wife that stayed home and cooked every meal etc.
We are too caught up in material possessions

My dad barely made it through HS and had to work multiple jobs so we can have electricity for at least 50 weeks a year. With that said, growing up we were all dumbasses and I am sure my dad was worried we would have a lifestyle drop after school. He tried to force us all to join the military so we could be "guaranteed a college education and a job"

Once we graduated college, I am sure those concerns went away as all of our first jobs paid more than his job at the time.

Regarding my kids, it's too early to tell how successful they may end up. But if I continue on my trajectory, I will at least make sure they are able to start off on the right foot; they will not have to worry about college loans, plan to pay for cars while in college, be able to offer more advice for them other than "hope you learned from my mistakes, and don't do what I did"

I definitely am. My dad made more money in 1992 than I do now but I have more to show for it. My mom ran up tons of credit cards while I have no debt besides my mortgage and my wife's Ulta rewards card.

My inlaws have rent houses so when they pass on, we get all of them. Each of my kids will have a house if they choose, all paid for.

If you come from a middle-class family, who doesn't experience this? I went from living with my parents through college in a nice 2-story house to a mobile mansion in a mobile mansion village. From there, I've moved my way up to a home similar to what my parents had.

The moral of the story is that it does kids good to realize that their parents worked hard and for a long time to get where they are. To me, having a drop in lifestyle is a good thing.

Yes, but the bar wasn't that high. My mom was a waitress and cook in a fast food restaurant called Burger Queen, and my dad was a truck driver.

Never made a lot of money, but they raised 4 kids to do things right and be good citizens. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

That’s part of the issue, they won’t want to deal with the change of living situation because they deserve to live a better lifestyle.

My wife and I are doing better than my parents did. We are around the same (or maybe slightly behind my wife’s parents). Our kids are young but I’m hopeful that they’ll be more successful than my wife and I, as any parent should be, regardless of wealth.

My son is doing better. I often worked 6 days a week and 12 to 16 hours a day during busy times. My son works 3 days a week, is far better paid and secure.

I’m right where my Dad was at 36, we’re in the same business, and if I end up like him at 62, I’ll be in good shape.

Better off than my parents as I got myself lifted up out of their blue collar world. Were they bad off? No, indeed they both worked hard all their lives and ended up w a great place in Florida.

But I've done better.

My boys have the opportunity to do even better if they listen to me, get educated and a STEM job. And then begin investing in real estate right out of school by (yes, here it comes youngsters) buying a POS house in the best neighborhood they can afford. Then fix it up, pay it off, and rent it out while they move on to something better. Their old man can help them with plumbing, electrical, etc. Now will they take the opportunity? That remains to be seen.

Yes.

That is my hope, but she's only 2

I see people around my age who are not better off than their parents and I wonder what went wrong. Do they just not care? Did they not want to go through the sacrifices required to better themselves? It makes me a bit sad for the kids of that generation. Your parents gave you a good life, why would you want to give your owns kids less than what you had?

ETA: to clarify, I'm not referring to peers who have parents that are physicians, lawyers, CEOs, etc... Just parents who are upper middle class with solid jobs.
