Why pot should be illegal:
1. 1 joint puts the same amount of tar in your lungs as 20 cigarettes
2. It does cause cancer ( it messes with your receptors and can turn one of them on for cancer in non academic language
3. The smell of smoking or growing just stinks horrible
4. It is addictive ( if you claim it's not lets ask all those people who just can't stop smoking it)
5. It does irreversible damage to your brain. (It slows your brain down)
And I know I am missing some here but these are the highlights
Literally all of this is wrong. Just flat out nonsense.

The Sheriffs and DAs in Louisiana still think it should be very illegal. More money for prisons and tanks.
This. Most Sheriffs in Louisiana run their parishes like little feifdoms. When you really look into it, they are probably the most powerful lobby in the state. It's exceedingly rare for one to lose re-election like we saw in St Tammany a year ago. Even worse is that our current governor's brother is a fourth generation Sheriff, which only emboldens them and their lobby.
No, you read that right. Daniel Edwards here in good 'ol Tangipahoa Parish is a fourth generation Sheriff.

Why would more employees start failing drug tests just because pot is legalized?
I guess the volume of testing could likely increase.
I did misinterpret your post, my apologies.

if legalized I suspect more employees will get fired from testing positive.
why
I think people who tinkered with it back in the day but have not encountered others with it since their teens/early 20's, will suddenly find it popping up here and there since it's legal and will be offered some by friends or family at some kind of alcohol-infused gathering. The old peer pressure returns!

The Sheriffs Association is by far the most influential lobbying group in the state. Sheriffs employ a lot of people who are easy to mobilizes around election, if a State Rep/Sen/Parish President has a falling out with their Sheriff they are going to have a tough time winning reelection, if they come out against a constitutional amendment it general doesn't pass, if they endorse a tax it'll pass, if they don't a bill in the legislature it gets amended to their liking. Because of their position they are able to easily raise a lot of money for political purposes, which they dole out to their candidates, because rarely do they face a legit challenger because just about every potentially qualified candidate is employed by them, as long as the deputes are happy (and in most parishes the Sheriff is related or a close family friend to most of them) nobody is going to run.

less addictive than tobacco.
Do you think for one second the big companies that end up owning the mary jane market won't do the same thing they did with cigarettes and make them even more addictive?

If so, what are your reasons?
I work as a drug rep and my pay may take a hit if it becomes legal and people stop buying so many prescription drugs.

Get the frick out of here. You can consume marijuana without smoking it. As for as your cancer argument, I am not sure if or how it causes cancer, but I know you are more at risk to get cancer if you use tobacco products, which are legal and if you make everything that causes cancer, illegal, the grocery store shelves would be half empty.
As for as being addictive, for certain people I am sure it can be addicting. Some people have addictive personalities and that is one of many things that they can be addicted to. Cigarettes and alcohol are addictive yet legalized. But the average person who smokes marijuana isn't ever going to become addicted, but if they smoke enough cigarettes, they will.
I watched a documentary on marijuana awhile back, I am sure a good bit of you reading this watched the same documentary. There was a little girl (3 or 4 years old) who had epilepsy. She would have non stop seizures.. Through the night she would have them, during the day she would have a number of them.. None of the medicine she was given, worked. Someone suggested to her parents to try marijuana, they did and it made a huge difference. The little girl stopped having seizures.. Or at least it prevented them from happening every day. Another parent called protective services on her for giving her child marijuana. It became a legal issue, etc.
So if you want to talk about the bad things that might come from it, let's compare it to the good things it does. Just because the government says "it's illegal" doesn't mean it is a bad thing to consume or that we should be concerned how other people use it.. With all that said, it being illegal has nothing to do with what is best for the public.

Tobacco is addictive due to the nicotine content. Marijuana doesn’t contain nicotine. The psychoactive cannabinols have not been shown to be a risk for addiction.

yes, we should believe what government tells us ...
Starin' at the boob tube, turnin' on the big knob
Tryin' to find some life in the waste land
Fin'ly found a program, gonna deal with Mary Jane
Ready for a trip into hate land
Obnoxious Joe comes on the screen
Along with his guest self-righteous Sam
And one more guy who doesn't count
His hair and clothes are too far out
While pushin' back his glasses Sam is sayin' casually
"I was elected by the masses"
And with that in mind he starts to unwind
A vicious attack on the finest of grasses
Well it's evil, wicked, mean and nasty
(Don't step on the grass, Sam)
And it will ruin our fair country
(Don't be such an arse, Sam)
Well, it will hook your Sue and Johnny
(You're so full of bull, Sam)
All will pay that disagree with me
(Please give up you already lost the fight, alright)

Nicotene is physically addictive. The active ingredient in pot is not even close.

Some of it is wrong. But there's a lot of right here.
It should be a controlled substance. Not illegal, but prescribed.

Nope. The only part of that post that wasn’t objectively wrong was the smell part... which is entirely subjective. I can provide plenty of psychopharmacological evidence to back up what I’m saying, too. Just let me know if you want some journal article links.

It absolutely shouldn’t be required. It should be 100% legal above the age of 18, but I’d even be okay with 21 considering alcohol regulations and the fact that grey matter will be mostly developed by that time.
