I think India is sick of their shite and will go a few round with them. Pakistan has a much weaker military and only the southern half of the country is really modern

You’re forgetting Pakistan has nuclear weapons. My professor in college who in his a prior career a high ranking intelligence official never forgot to point out that Pakistan easily has the potential for being the most dangerous country in the world for that reason alone.

I always found it interesting that in the Cold War, we supported Pakistan and Russia supported India

I know. I mentioned the religion thing in the original post.

I’m talking about ethnicity here.

That's a good question... I do know they both are quick to open up a vap shop.

So does India. Both have the ability to go nuclear. Outside of that, India has the weight of numbers on its side and a better economy that can withstand a longer war. It would be bloody. I'm saying India would win in the end.

Wasn't it about containment? Pakistan shared a border with Soviet-influenced Afghanistan. Also, Pakistan was more than willing to partner up, while India tried to remain more neutral, I thought.

your question assumes a high level of homogony within India.

It is anything but. And then add on top of it a layer of Mongol (Mogul) blood, but only among the elite.

And then there is the old caste system to boot, which Pakistan was part of until the British abolished it but, especially the Pashtuns, did not 'participate' in because of the muslim religion.

This is still my favorite Onion Article ever.

India was distinctly anti-British so India so Russia made a fair amount of headway in India during the time

India is much much much more stable than Pakistan. Like the US has contingency plan on contingency plan to ensure Pakistan nuked don’t fall into the wrong hands

yes, that path was set upon during the British-Russian "Great Game".

It's altered now, especially with the USA becoming a world power since then, but there are still remnants/echoes.

I'd say it is very much about oil/energy for India now. And because of the war on terror and our "association" with Pakistan out of necessity India has been wary of us and in a way kept us at arms length.

I was disappointed that Trump didn't make more inroads with India in his first term. That MIGHT be changing. It's hard to overcome that history of alignment and the lure of cheap Russian oil.
