I'm torn about which I should do.

If the mega gym has a power rack (or 2) when some dipshite is doing curls in the other one, good selection of dumbbells, and a nice selection of cardio stuff, then do the mega gym.

Really kinda depends on how serious of a lifter you are. Some people can get it done in a hotel gym.

If you're going to use the amenities like the pool and steam room, it's worth every penny.

this. i can get a workout in even the shittiest of gyms, but i won't use the steam room, sauna or showers.

If you enjoy using the wet amenities a premium gym is absolutely worth the upcharge.

I work out every day and go to lifetime fitness which is like a country club.

It's worth every dollar to me and my family. I use the steam room and premium equipment every day. My family uses the pools 12 months a year. They live there all summer

Depends on what you want out of it

I'm married, so my fitness goals are centered around cardio, being there when it's less crowded, and not being social. I'm there for "business" only. I go to Anytime Fitness and haul arse on a treadmill for 30 minutes (3.5 to 4.10 miles per session), then lift afterwards. I can get that at any gym.

Holy crap. The initiation fee is $500. So I probably won't join that one. I'll try to negotiate anyway and I think they do have a program that will refund you (you half to work out 40 of your first 90 days, take several free classes, etc).

For social/meeting girls probably.

depends on your class and attire

If you have a tattoo on your calf and/or wear muscle shirts then no it wouldn't help your social or meeting girls

Equinox round cost way more than $80/month too. It's more like $120/month IIRC.

I find using a more bare minimum/basic gym helps me to focus more and helps to keep me motivate.

The people there are usually there to workout and not be overly social.

Are you saying Anytime Fitness has a $500 initiation?? I never heard of such and I can go to any AF in the country.

I paid $0 for an initiation fee.

Totally depends on the individual gym I'm sure. I liked working out at Snap Fitness when I was a member there, but only at certain ones. It was always smaller and some only had one bench and one squat rack. Wasn't a problem at a few since I was usually one of 2 or 3 people there. Other places were full and annoying.

I'm now at a bigger gym with a lap pool, spa, racquetball, etc. and it doesn't matter as much when it's full since there is a lot more equipment. Sometimes it's a pain to have so many people, but it usually evens out that there is so much more available. I would never join a gym just because it had the spa area though. I use the lap pool, but don't get the appeal of the hot tub and steam room. Especially considering the other people that are always using it

If you don't know many people in the area I'd
go with the mega gym for sure. I probably would anyway. I don't want to spend my away from work time where I work. Plus, what if you work with a bunch of jerks and then have to work out around the? Even worse, what if they want to be workout buddies? Also, how far away is it from where you'll be living?

Their pricing varies by location and market. The cheapest you will find anywhere might be $150 for one club....$230 for all club nationwide membership.

There is one next door to my new office I'm seriously thinking about joining. It's worth the extra cash for me to be able to go before work or on my lunch break and shower there(other local gyms are disgusting and a cesspool). If you work out consistently 3-5x week and take advantage of what they are charging extra for its worth it.

My wife and I were paying around $80/each for nice gym with fancy machines, all of these classes, nice pools and tennis courts. We never really utilized any of the classes or outdoor amenities though. We're giving Planet Fitness a try right now. Obviously the facilities aren't as nice, the women aren't as pretty and the clientele is a bit trashier but so far it's getting the job done. We'll have to decide in the next few weeks if we'll stick with the expensive gym or settle for Planet Fitness. The $1600 in savings annually speaks volumes IMO

Go with this one unless you're going to get something else, like basketball if you play, out of the better gym.

We have a premium gym connected to our office. You can't beat going at lunch and saving an hour each day (and you tend to eat healthier)

$200/month for a gym membership means someone should be making a hefty salary. I know people making less than $50k that have Equinox memberships and credit card debt.

Does Equinox include free trainers or classes? That's the only way I could justify.

ETA: $150/month + $100 initiation fee in my area.

If cost is not an issue, I'd choose premium. They facilities will be great. Sure there may be a more prominent social aspect but you can still get a great workout in as long as that is your focus. If merely having the social aspects available to someone affects their ability to get in a good workout, then they probably shouldn't waste any money on a gym.
