My mom was in a private room for a few years before we moved her to a two person room. It was a great move. In a private room they just lie there alone most of the day. In a two person room at least she had someone to talk to.

Thankfully he is 100% in his right mind so he can tell us if something isn’t right or if they aren’t taking care of him
He was the one who noticed snacks were missing, had we had a camera we could have caught which staff members were streaking his food

NO and those who spread this thought cause more harm than good by downing the reputation of good homes.
Are there "bad/less than ideal" homes? Absolutely.

You get what you pay for. I’ve heard some truly sick shite out of nursing homes.

My parents always said the same & that they would never put my Grandparents there
My Grandpa had to go for rehab, without it he would have never walked again
He said his motivation was to get the hell out of there
We swore in the future we would do whatever it took, he would never go back
Last year he asked to go back, he thought us bringing him food, cleaning & shopping was a burden on us
No one is going to take care of your family like you expect them to
When you hear horror stories it makes the things we complain about look petty but we are paying for a service that isn’t being provided at the level we expect based on what we pay.
There are some really awesome nurses & staff but they are the minority
Since the shutdown he has said he regretted his decision & wishes he wasn’t there

Correct. They also require a sign posted on the door of the room notifying all that it's under video surveillance. We haven't had any issues with things disappearing.
I had an uncle in another facility years ago (he has long been deceased, now) who didn't have such equipment in his room. The bad element who either worked there or was "just passing through" robbed the poor man blind. Wedding ring and wrist watch taken right off his finger and arm. A dementia patient, for God's sake.
That's not happening to my brother.

A word of advice for anyone today.
PLAN FOR YOUR OLD AGE AND YOUR SPOUSES OLD AGE.
Instead of living paycheck to fricking paycheck, running up debt, buying shite on credit cards, SAVE and put $$ away for your old age.
If you prepare NOW for your elderly years, you won't ever have to enter a nursing home and be the subject of abuse from anyone.

He has nothing of any value with him
We started limiting the snacks & kept track of what he had until the shut down
I don’t think they are supposed to even have cash, they are supposed to only get a few dollars at a time from their “account”
An older lady asked me to help her get a candy bar from the machine & opened a wallet full of cash
I was scared to death that she was diabetic & not supposed to have candy, luckily she tried to give me a 20
Told her the machine wouldn’t take it & to ask a nurse for change
There is also a lady on his hall that always asks me to go plug her phone in to charge, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have service
I tell her a nurse has to do it
My Dad has a friend there that will ask him to do things, he has a camera so my Dad will go in & help him (move his phone charger, grab his cell phone, bring him his laptop)
My Grandpa already has internet service in his room so I am going to push for a camera once we can get back in there

My mom is in one. She had a stroke and is paralyzed on her left side. Medicare will not pay for aides to come sit with her while I’m at work or I would have moved her in with me Thankfully I had a camera installed before the pandemic and we still have problems. Most of the CNA’s are just lazy and they only have a few good nurses. The director is a narcissist napoleon POS. I go every day when I get off work and sit by our window. There is like 140 residents but only two have cameras because the home will not let you use there WiFi because they don’t want cameras... that’s a cost I pay no problem to make sure she isn’t abused

There are some great facilities out there, the private-pay ones. The medicaid ones can be pretty depressing. I don't know about torture, but they are providing the very basic care you need to stay alive. Not much comfort.
My grandfather lived the last year of his life in one, after a terrible fall. He was on private pay. His facility had a private pay "wing" and the rest was medicaid. Even within that facility, the difference was shocking.
Toward the end, it looked like he was going to run out of cash (He had a LTC benefit as part of his pension plan, but it wasn't enough to cover the full cost, so the rest came out of his pocket. We also knew it was near the end. My mom and her sisters decided they would just pay the difference for what ended up being about 6 weeks.

you're at the mercy of, mostly, lower skilled, poorly paid, lazy workers. Would you trust them to care for a pet, let alone a human being? I wouldn't

Most nursing homes I’ve visited are decent places. The staffs seem to go out of their way to take care of the residents as best they can. It’s a tough job dealing with end-of-life issues. That being said, look at a place like Lambeth House in New Orleans. That’s probably one of the nicest ones around. It’s where the moneyed elite in New Orleans wind up and yet it was ground-zero for COVID 19 a few weeks ago. Go figure.

The one’ s in the Alexandria-Pineville area are pretty good.My mother was in one in Pineville and she got very good care.I visited there 4-5 times a week ,at different times and never found anything shady going on.
There were lazy aides hanging around that did the bare minimum,but some of them were excellent.That goes on in hospitals also.
What bugs me is that the nursing homes are expensive,pay is low but the owners are fabulously wealthy.The owner of the one my mother was in bought in to WinterQuarters hunting club,$800,000 for a membership.Anybody ever ride up Hwy 71 towards Colfax and see the horse farm on the left,those are race horses.The owners are in the nursing home business.
I don’t remember all the details but Edwin Edwards allegedly took plenty of bribes to issue licenses for people to open nursing homes.
I know of a couple of ex-state representatives that were allies of E.E. that have interests in nursing homes, they seem to be doing pretty well.
Just the way things work in Louisiana.

This is what we have. You do need a cellular plan- but it is great. Especially since this Covid mess. Peace of mind.....Everything is controlled through a smartphone app. Very easy to use.
