Where they just beat you, let you get bed sores so bad you're constantly in pain, dont help you with your meal knowing you cant eat unless someone helps, etc. Sickening.

I personally have no desire to be old and exist like that. Languishing away in a nursing home basically forgotten. Would rather meet my maker sooner. Getting old is a cruel thing.

No, not all. But you’re kidding yourself if you think you’re going to get great care 24/7 when D’Ashtray and Trelanka, who make $9.00 an hour when they show up, give an actual damn.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some very good caregivers, but they’re few and far between. Nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc. are having a hard time finding quality people to do the job when the average fast food joint pays the same or more and that doesn’t consist of diaper changes, showers, and feeding.

My Mom was in one. We had no choice. They took care of her real good, but, we were paying big bucks. We also had one of us there every day to visit and check on her. When time came for her end, the staff help us in so many ways to make things easy on all.

But yes, I herd of stories that are nightmares.

No, the advancement of modern medicine in the field of prolonging the end years of life, without paralleling improving the quality of life also, has turned aging into a borderline cruel thing.

It’s really fricking hard to maintain someone’s quality of life as they age and their body breaks down so I’m not shitting on anyone. Just making an observation.

An attorney once told me about a case he had in Mobile County. Fire ants got to a bed-ridden nursing home patient. Patient died from all the bites/stings.

It depends, cheaper ones won’t be great care but not a torture center. If you have the money to pay for a decent one it’s not bad.

Btw unless you have long term care insurance nursing homes will cost you an arm and a leg. I believe on average a private room nursing home will cost you over 6k a month.

assisted living facilities

Very different than a nursing home. And ironically, more expensive considering the care should be easier to provide.

My grandmother was in a nursing home for several years after she had a stroke, plus onset of dementia (Probably accelerated by the strike). The facility she was in was the nursing home off of highway 21 in Covington. Her care was excellent, the facility much improved from when I was a kid, and her health was as good as could be expected.

My parents would visit her every day, every other day, and hep feed her as well as other patients so I’m sure she wasn’t ignored because staff knew my parents would find out immediately and I wonder if that is what’s going on in a lot of these facilities. Elderly are put in there and forgotten by family.

The people that could do something about this will never end up in a nursing home...
Boomers are just starting to hit the age of nursing home patients..Things will just get worse...

Most of them have very little family involvement and even worse there are many that are in nursing homes because family abused them or let them live in deplorable conditions.

Nursing homes are unpleasant but absolutely necessary.

They used to be a place for old people to have sex and enjoy their last decade. Now it’s bad story after bad story. I’m afraid Obamacare may have ended the nursing home glory days.

Some deserve the criticism they receive- and then some. But some of the workers genuinely care about the people they are tasked with caring for and want to make a positive difference for them. I've seen plenty of both, involving a family member.

I feel badly for the truly forgotten elderly in some of these places who have no one willing to fight for their well-being and make sure they are getting the help they need- which is always a necessity.

The best thing that has happened in the past couple of years concerning this industry in LA was the right to install a cellular camera in your loved one's room. That helps solve countless problems.

They need to lift the moratorium on nursing home beds to allow free market competition and for new facilities to be built without endless red tape. But that will not happen in Louisiana for a very long time because of the nursing home lobby and the long established history of our crooked arse politicians.

They fought hard against the in-room camera bill. Like one of the stipulations they demanded (and received) was not allowing wifi cams to use the facility's wifi- which basically eliminates their use.
That turns a lot of people off the idea because of additional cost.

But we proceeded with a dedicated cellular cam and are happy we did. It can sniff out a liar in a heartbeat.
