We used to go to the library to play Oregon Trail and look at the Eyewitness books

If you don't live in a trash city then they're great for community meetings, kids events, or even quiet reading areas. Great for studying as well.

Is it a waste of money?
I can think of a lot of other things that waste more money than a library.
The one closest to me has things for kids during the Summer. And it promotes reading. When school is in, there are kids who go there on a daily basis because they don't have a way to access the internet at home.
Also, if you have a library card, you can check out ebooks. They have of the new books that come out every week..
Also, its a good place to donate books to instead of just throwing them away.

I bring my kids to the library regularly. For events and they get excited about books. Honestly I’d love the library if you could bring coffee in and use it as a quiet space. Like coffee shops used to be before they became drive thru restaurants.

Don't think I've ever heard of a shooting or a gang fight at a library. Just saying.

If you know how to use them they are an incredible public resource.
Just the databases alone are worth it. Would cost any one person a fortune to access those.

Libraries themselves are not a waste of money but spending millions on new facilities is a waste.

Many are moving into current tech.
Many have 'maker labs' where a person can 3D print thier projects. Handy for those that don't have one.

I totally agree with you about too many libraries now. But the amount of downvotes this post is receiving proves that folks don't mind throwing money at libraries. And most of these folks probably haven't been to a library in years.
Cheaper to have a bookmobile set up in different areas to serve the citizens.

When I was at LSU, Middleton was always the place I'd get any decent studying done. Could never do it at my place or a friend's place since there would be nothing but loud music/TV playing with everyone partying/drinking/smoking/etc. Middleton, literally any library, is the perfect place for any student to get some quiet, productive studying going on IMO.
Also, kids LOVE spending time in the library looking for books and reading. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. One of my sister's has two kids, and she says it's their favorite place to be. They just love reading kids books. I think that's awesome.
And like other people have said in this thread, you can use the library for a ton of other different reasons: use the computer, have kid events, community outings, coffee place, find old magazines/newspapers, etc.
So no, it is definitely not a waste of money AT ALL. With the amount of dumb people in this country, I think we need more if anything. I can think of many many worse ways the government could spend our tax dollars.

Of all the things the government blows money on I think libraries are the least of the problem.

No, they provide invaluable services. Meeting / conference rooms for the public to use, events for kids, summer reading programs, free access to reading materials and resources for those with a tighter budget. I use their libby / overdrive app constantly for audiobooks - saves me at least $50 a month based on audible prices.

Good call! I wanted those books SO bad when I was younger but IIRC the price was outrageous for the whole set.

As a life long learner, I often use libraries to explore topics for I don’t want to spend money on books. Of all the wasteful things to which my tax dollars are allocated, the public library is not one of them.

Plus, much of the tax-funding is local instead of federal. Library users have "skin in the game."
In Louisiana, with your public library barcode, you gain access to a wealth of databases held by your local library as well as those held by the State Library of Louisiana. If you're a serious researcher, your local library will also borrow materials for you through inter-library loan. Sometimes this means they will get books for you from other libraries around the country if yours doesn't own a copy of what you seek.
Sometimes that borrowing is simply a .pdf of an article, again, from a journal or a book chapter that your library (parish/county) doesn't own.
EVERYTHING is NOT on the internet. And even if half of it is, can you access it readily and for free????? NO.

Libraries are probably the least wasteful and most impactful government program. Sorry you live in a hick town and don't do any of that fancy book learnin'.

Some years ago I briefly quit drinking and ended up spending a lot of that time at the library.
