Are lesser known tires from a bigger brand worth the lesser price?

It’s that time again and I need to replace a set of tires that will run about $1100 on what I normally buy. It’ll be all highway and city driving.

I can get a set of Rocky Mountain HTs (Falken brand) for $800.

UTQG for the RMHTs is 600AB and 700BB on the $1100 set.

Great point, which has nothing to do with this thread.

My wife commutes over 60 miles a day for work. I've bought expensive tires that didn't last a year. I bought her cheaper tires last year that the Mexican tire store had on sale. They are holding up the best we've had.

Buying tires is the equivalent of buying diamonds or mattresses…. You make the purchase wondering just how much you overpaid.

I previously had Michelin tires. They were the best tires I have ever driven on. Continental is another good brand as well. Do I think they are worth it? Yes, in the sense that they are a better-manufactured tire than the lesser-known brands.

I normally don't buy any extended warranty or roadside hazard program when it comes to vehicles, but if you live in Louisiana, I recommend that you buy the replacement tire package (usually a $50 deductible). I replaced 3 Michelin tires within 1.5 years due to the roads in Louisiana. These tires are approximately $240 each at Discount Tire.

Bought mine from walmart.com got the road hazard and one year later a tire gets a screw all the way through one side and out the other so I take it back to Walmart and they zeroed the new tire out with the road hazard

As long as the ratings are equivalent they should be pretty similar. You may not get as good of traction in the rain or something like that though.

It depends...

For commuter miles without an performance concerns just go look at one of the sites that reviews tires and pick one that is a good value. A quick search for those tires have few review results but users aren't happy with them.

Looking at the wear rating specs is almost useless, they are not standardized between brands and not even consistence within the same brand.

I look at reviews. If it's a sports car and you need Z or even ZR rated us do high end name brand.

If you're getting less than H get whatever they have for a good price. In mid tier names. I swapped my continental for slightly cheaper Goodyear and really like them. Though I got the ones designed for wet traction.

Cheaper brands from a well-known manufacture usually have a shorter warranty, more road noise and a little less wear resistance.
If you're SOLELY driving locally as opposed to taking long trips or highway commuting, they may be worth considering.
