If we are being honest, most brands have. Toyota doesn't have the advantage they had in the 1980s. They've been innovative with hybrid technology, but when it comes to mechanical reliability, most mainstream brands have caught up.

Although design defects do exist sometimes, for the most part consumers have a wide range of options between a lot of very good cars today. Mazda, Nissan, Honda, Chevrolet, Ford, VW, Toyota, or Hyundai....even the worst of them will run trouble free for well past 100,000 miles if you take care of it.

And I would bet that the very worse from every one of those brands today are significantly more fuel efficient and more reliable than the very best car sold in 1985.

There is one exception. In both Consumer's Reports and JD Power, FIAT has brought down the average defect rate for the entire industry. Before they returned to the US market, the difference between worst and first was narrowing significantly. FIAT may be the one brand I would black ball entirely for reliability reasons.

I have a 2017 Sorento and it's great. Consumer Reports rated it the #2 SUV 1 point behind the Toyota Highlander.

Neither of the vehicles you mentioned are SUVs. They are both crossovers. Kia doesn't even make an SUV (for U.S customers) according to their own website....sedans, crossover/minivan, and compacts only. But keep telling yourself you drive an SUV if it makes you feel better.

I had a Hyundai Sonata rental on my trip a few weeks ago. It was awesome, but I wouldn't drive it (or any car) as my regular everyday vehicle

I don't know about trashy, but I sure wouldn't want one. Got one (an Optima, I think?) as a rental one time and didn't like anything about it. Seats weren't comfortable, didn't handle particularly well, visibility wasn't great. Would NOT buy one.

I've been considering buying a Hyundai or Kia crossover. They have some really good selling points.

Friend of mine bought a Hyundai sedan, I forget which one (elantra maybe). Quite honestly it was a very uncomfortable ride and you could hear wind whistling at the doors/windows. It was nice looking with leather etc but the ride wasn't very impressive.

About to get a Kia Soul, to get to work and back. I think I've outgrown caring about car labels.

Both Kia and Hyundai came into the US market as very affordable entry level cars. Over the years they have built a name for themselves and also have increased the craftsmanship (not sure if that's the most accurate description) to where they are not just check Korean cars. The Genesis brand is legit.

I have a Hyundai and I really like it. When my son gets old enough to drive I'm going to give him my truck and buy a small Hyundai Commuter..... really like the looks of the Elantra GT. With that said, I'm 40 years old and can give a good 2 shits less what anyone things about me, i'm past that stage of life.

still known as SUV's and point being KIA rated right behind the Toyota , which is answering the OP's question:

The one I have is the first model year (2011) after the redesign and just went over the 100k mile mark. Over that time I've had zero mechanical problems. The interior has held up very well. I'll probably be looking for a new vehicle at the end of this year or early 2018 and would definitely consider another Sorento.
