If you must, lease one for 2-3 years and do not buy. Get rid of it before the warranty runs out.

I've got a 2020 BMW X2 that we've only had to get some brake work performed on, other than routine maintenance. The brake work was more than for the Hondas I've owned. I think it was about $1200. We probably spend less than a $1000 a year on it. Once it starts getting expensive, we'll get rid of it. Until then, it is the best driving car we've ever owned. Also leased an X3 for three years and no issues.

You can always have bad luck, but I find that people drastically overstate the "German cars have high maintenance costs" BS
It’s not even bad luck. Even with good luck, you’re stuck with $300 oil changes, $800 batteries, $1000 tires, $500 cabin filters, the list goes on.
You can dodge a lot of it for a couple years, but eventually you’re getting a $5-10k maintenance bill.

The B8.5 Audi platform I'm looking at is 2013-2017, so definitely not a newer car. Maintenance would be an ordeal for sure.
I own a car lot and I bought a 2013 Audi A5 Premium Plus AWD 2D Coupe Quattro 2.0T. I got it fairly cheap, it needed a new clutch. Replaced that and swapped the turbo with the KO4 bigger one and installed an intercooler. Its making right at 400rwhp now and is fun as heck to drive around. I use it as my daily so as to not load my truck up with miles. I've found parts are not more expensive than any Japanese manu.
However, my wife drives a BMW 7 series and I can't wait to get her out of it. The tires alone are $688 each. We live in the country and a rat made a nest under her intake and chewed a knock sensor wire, $2200 later and it was repaired. Its only a matter of time before the radiator leak appears and that will be a couple thousand to repair as well, so I try to keep her in a car under warranty, but she loves the German import rides. They are really fun to drive and smooth. But you do pay extra for it.

No. Bought a Tiguan for my daughter. It burns oil and smokes profusely after idling for a while. Volkswagen refuses to admit there is a problem. It seems that the engine in the tiguans is known for this and they just change their definition of normal oil consumption in order to not have to replace engines. It's all over the Internet. I'll never own another one and I'll probably get rid of this one

I owned a Volkswagen once. Had to pay like $1000 to replace some tiny piece. Will never buy one again

I have a 2014 SL550 bought in 2014. It’s 12 years old and I haven’t had any issues yet. But, it only has 42K miles as it’s a garage queen. Great car.

Mechanics YouTube and FB videos commonly slam German cars for being over engineered and much harder to work on.

“Considering getting rid of one or both of my Honda/Acura and driving a B8.5 Audi S4 or S5 for a few years while I'm still single and childless”
Little long but trying to give you honest feel of my experiences.. give this some serious thoughts before deciding.
Pros and cons.. fwiw have owned Audis for a long time .. still have an a7 in garage I need to get out..
Here is my experience.. Also I have switched from Audi to Honda for my interstate/dog/commuter and now from Audi a7 to a Lexus ls500 for my wife’s city car
Audis claim is exactly what they are… a performance sporty suv or car( use to drive the q5 as my highway and dog car).. had a6 and a7 for city..
They are beautiful cars imo.. the sport back is distinctive ( came over on their a7)… they were not sure Americans would like it.. we did.. now everyone is imitating it….they drive smooth.. they are zippy.. they are fun…they are a good sport car that is also a adult car.
Ok why did I leave them.. once out of warranty … yikes!!!!!!!!!!.. .. dealer will rape you for maintaining it.. need to be darn sure you get a certified mechanic to do anything.. I mean anything!!!… change the headlight. .. over a grand I recall.. change the oil.. some monkey will screw it up and next thing you know your on side of the road….
Why am I getting rid of the a7 ( it is beautiful and a great car)… but my German car mechanic was talking to my wife and explained to her( she puts about 1500 miles a year on it)… your car has low mileage.. is maintained but getting aged.. you need to decide.. cause one of these days you are going to smell burn oil.. you are going to bring it in and I am going to tell you the plastic stuff associated with your oil system fill cost about 10k yo replace.. ( she asked him.. what would you buy.. he said go get a Lexus)
The maintenance is significant after warranty.. I like to keep cars a long time.
Fwiw .. the s5 is nice!…

All three had the same 2.0T drivetrain which Audi seems to have pretty well figured out at this point.
Yeah, except for that little water pump service. They start seeping coolant around the very complex plastic housing around 30k miles and inevitably need replacing. The parts kit alone at online sellers runs $700 with shipping. Doing it at a dealer is $1500-$2k.
Then there's installing a new battery. You have to have the right scanner and subscription or the car won't recognize the new battery and becomes undrivable. That can also happen if you disconnect the battery to do service.

Dumb.
Keep something reliable and cheap as your daily, get something sportier as a secondary you don't have to rely on. Maybe a Porsche but also Lexus has some nice offerings like the IS, two brands that have a history or quality and good reliability. Maintenance costs will be higher but if they are not primary drivers then you won't be piling on the mileage either.

15 or so years ago, a friend's wife owned an Audi, and I recall him complaining about $200 oil changes. Maybe doing your own maintenance would reduce your cost, but I can easily see that same oil change being $300 now.
Just something to keep in mind as you decide . . .

My moms drove nothing but German cars since I’ve been born and she’s hardly had any problems. She had a Porsche for the last 7-8 years bout to get another.
Had a BMW and Mercedes before that. No problem.
I keep hearing online that German cars are maintenance nightmares but I know several people who have and have had em for sometime and they have no problems.

No. Buy a Toyota and keep it forever.

We’ve owned 5 Porsche’s and they’ve been very reliable
All cars can have mechanical failures
Oil change $175.
We’ve also owned ford, Chevy, Jeep and I think Mazda - years ago. Even jaguar and Audi.
With very limited mechanical issues.
So I guess we’ve been lucky
