re: Are any new home appliances better today than ones made 10, 20, 30 years ago?

Sure. But I think a Mr. Coffee type coffee maker is what most people think of when thinking about what people used 10-30 years ago. And modern "premium" coffee machines are much better due to better temperature control and/or built in grinders.
But it's hard to beat a good French press or percolator coffee in regards to coffee strength.
All of the screens and electronics on fridges are ridiculous. Same for washers and dryer. Plus too many sensors that can fail despite nothing being wrong.
I find old school dishwashers suck at actually cleaning dishes. Growing up we basically had to completely hand wash the dishes before putting in the dishwasher.
Outside of the Rainbow type of vacuum. Modern vacuums are better mostly due to suction power and light weight.

NOT.
A.
CHANCE.
the washing machines or refrigerators are probably the worst slides of what you listed.
If you are gen X your parents had the harvest yellow or the avacado green refrigerator that will outlast you and your kids’lives. You cannot say that for todays products.
And the washing machines…. They really just suck right now. They have tons of bells and whistles to mask how shitty their lifespan is.

My house was built in 51, I've got the original stove/oven. It's a tank and never had any trouble with it. It's 48" wide. Replacing one of those is no joke and as long as it's working I'm keeping it.

Some of the worst may be window unit air conditioners. My aunt lives in an old house. It is a well-built house, decently insulated, but has just never been outfitted with central air. She's always ran window units, and they've always done a good job. She has gas for heat in the winter.
Three years ago I replaced her 23+ year old AC window unit with a new one. I couldn't find one without wifi or all digital controls. So, I got her a GE with decent reviews.
The motherboard or control board has started acting up in the fourth year. Nothing is mechanically wrong with it, but it just shuts off randomly. The compressor isn't acting up, it isn't throwing breakers, none of the other common possible issues are occurring. The bells and whistles are just fricked, after less than four years.

When I moved into one house 13 years ago it had the same Maytag w/d that I bought when I was pg with my son who is 34. When I moved from there I brought them with. Still chugging along and doing the job just fine and they are near 35 YO.

I replaced the element in the oven once and I had a little trouble finding one but I found an appliance store in town that could order them and I bought 3.

My KitchenAid stand mixer has been handed down and down and down... last we figured it's a 50's vintage and still gets used a few times a month.

Washing machines are way worse now. Nothing will ever beat the turn the knob and start your washing of the old school washers.
I have to disagree there. Washing machine I bought 20years ago is still going strong and I’ve bought 2 other top load LGs and they run just fine.

Dishwashers? Why do current models take like 3 hours to finish a load?
Should probably check your settings, but my dishes are also nearly completely dry compared to my mom/grandma’s when I was a kid.
quote:
Microwaves? Haven't changed much since the 80s. Thankful at least government intervention hasn't made these worse.
Agreed.
quote:
Refrigerators? Who ever needs a digital display? No improvements here, maybe even worse, since they won't last as long.
One could argue a digital display and ability to filter/order food from it is an improvement.
quote:
Stoves? They're about to take away your gas Stoves.
Well that has nothing to do with improvements being made. Convection baking being one of them.

The Kuereg was pretty innovative when it came out. Your ability to make a single cup nearly on demand rather than an entire pot is/was nice.

Only thing I can think of, and you have to go outside for this is a pellet grill. Those are pretty nice that wasn't around decades ago. I dunno.
Pellet grills/smokers…flat top griddles…electric smokers all improved the process of having smoking/cooking outdoors.

Maybe I'm old school, but I can't think of any home appliances that by getting a new one, you're improving the functionality.
That’s because you’re going into it with a preconceived notion that it/they won’t.

My water heater is from 1996.
My air conditioner is from 1998, although the condenser is older.
My bathroom has been untouched since 1956, save for the toilet.
All the new stuff is junk.
It’s about to get worse because of the dept of energy. They are about to ban all gas water heaters and also about to ban air conditioners. Also our light bulbs have been banned.
Remember this when you cast a vote in the primary—which candidate can win a general election and stop the insanity.

Hell no! I’m replacing my dryer for the second time in 8 months. Samsung. Do not buy Samsung appliances. They beat you down on warranty repairs until you just say screw it like I did, and go buy a new one.
Took forever to get repair person, and once finally got them, the part was on no on hand backorder with no idea when it would arrive. No answers did I get from them. Like I said, they just beat you down until you give up.

Not at all. Microwaves haven't changed much, but washers, dryers, refrigerators, and dishwashers are worse now than they used to be. I've had several repairmen say 10 years is all you can hope for, no matter what you pay or what brand you get.
I think SpeedQueen might be an exception to that.
I still have an Amana Radar Range that's 50 years old and works like it always did.

Most people buy cheap appliances and then complain when they don't last. There is a huge difference between going to Lowe's or Home Depot and getting an off the floor LG or Samsung vs going to a dealer and getting Kitchenaid, Viking, etc
We just got a new built-in Kitchenaid. It's pretty badass and IDC what you say there is no way older fridges are comparable much less better.
