Applying for scholarships you have no intention of accepting

Lately in the news I've noticed quite a few stories of high school seniors being accepted to 100+ colleges and getting millions in scholarship offers. I can understand applying to multiple schools and choosing the one that gives you the most opportunity, but I'd imagine most keep it under 10. The latest story I've seen is a New Orleans senior that was accepted to 115 schools and was offered over $3.7 million in scholarships. With a number like that there had to be quite a few she has no intention of even considering. Also, while many scholarships are given to the next in line if declined, some of these will just disappear for the year if they are not accepted. That means that somewhere another senior will have missed an opportunity for assistance because someone wanted to pad their ego.
How does the OT feel about this? Is it a dick move or should the runner up have tried a little harder?

I applied to 20 plus schools to compare scholarship offers and LSU gave me the best one. I didn’t deny anyone an opportunity to get a scholarship at a school I didn’t attend. In fact I got my LSU scholarship as an alternate after people decided to attend elsewhere. Most of the scholarships are automatic based on GPA/test scores. Really don’t see the issue.

There's a common application you can fill out so you can apply to many schools at the same time.

I think the high schools push for this.
High schools love to announce how much money in scholarships have been ‘awarded’ to the graduating class. It’s such a ruse.
They include ALL scholarship offers whether accepted or not.

I haven't applied to college in a long time so I may be out of the loop...surely you mean scholarship money "offered" right? I wouldn't think that a collective 3.7M would be given to this student by schools on the hope that it would sway them there.

Yes, scholarships offered. I thought most scholarships offered by a college directly were conditional upon actually attending the school though.

I was wondering because I know my kids had to pay application fees so it didn't make sense to apply to so many places.

Yes, it's completely stupid. The schools push it so they can brag about how much scholarship money their students "earned"
That's like saying I was offered 10 jobs at $100,000 per year so I make $1 million per year.

I saw this article. She had a 3.5 GPA . How or why she was offered soooo much with a 3.5 GPA escapes me. There are quite a few kids with higher GPAs who don't get that kind of attention.

I didnt apply to many schools but i did apply for scholarships to i school in knew i was never going to attend. I ended up with several scholarships to the school that no else could get once i got it. You had to apply for those individual scholarship too. Till this day i feel like a dick because plenty of students lost out bc of me.
