I'm thinking 6 is the limit for me these days. Driving up to St Louis I was thinking the whole time I should have flown.

Work trip that the company is paying for? I’ll fly if it saves me an hour door to door. Less time away from home.

Personal trip on my dime with the family? Nashville to Orlando is ~650 miles so that’s roughly my limit with kids. Anything more than that and I’m spending too much of the vacation driving.

Wife and I used to do a 900 mile drive home for Christmas pre-kids. That one was brutal.

We went to lsu vs tcu in Dallas in 2013. Stayed out partying until 6am after the game (was in college at the time). Had to ride back in a crowded truck 100 degrees outside and the interstate was backed up the whole way because of forest fires. Took us 11 hours to get home. Ever since then I’ve sworn always fly for anything over 6 hours and I’ve stuck to it like glue for 10 years. Thag return ride home ruined me, frick road trips

A lot of things about flying can be a pain, delays and dealing with stupid people who can’t get off the plane in a timely fashion but I’ve grown to enjoy the experience. I like eating or having a beer in an airport on a long layover or kicking back with a good book on a long flight. An airport beer is the most underrated beer

There are lots of factors. But usually I end up driving. Kids, dogs, stops along way to see family, and a nondirect expensive 12+ hr flying day all = drive.

I flew from Greenville to Missoula via Denver a few weeks ago and drove our car back. I was solo and slept in the car just one night all the way to Cookville TN. I could’ve made it the rest of the way to Greenville but had a work call I wanted to be semi coherent for the next am so slept at Buc-cee’s.

It was a strangely enjoyable journey.

You’re just going to have to help me with the math here….

30 min drive to the airport
Get to airport an hour before flight assuming TSA precheck
1.5 hour flight
Carry on - no waiting for luggage
Walk and wait 15 min for an Uber (total time 30 mins)
Drive 15 mins to hotel

Total time: 4 hours max (stretch it to 5 somehow if you want)

How the hell are you getting that you’re in the same ballpark or more flying?

Some of you people just don’t know how to travel efficiently. Fair if you don’t have to do it often.

I live an hour from an airport (Tuscaloosa). That's one hour driving east to the airport, when I might be needing to go west or north or south.

Most flights are not direct flights. Most of them have connections. That adds layover/extra flight time. That can easily add two hours or more (I just took a direct flight to Vegas...took 4 hours. Connecting flights were upwards of 8 hours).

On longer trips sometimes carry-ons aren't enough.

I used to travel for work, back when Platnium was the highest Delta status (and I had it about 6 years in a row).

Depends on the circumstances.

If I have flexibility in how long I can be off and it is just me or me and the wife, I am fine with driving.

If it is outside a certain range and/or the kids are coming? Flying is less annoying than multiple kids fighting with each other while am driving a car I hate to drive under normal circumstances.

When I go to Champaign, IL for work (from Ridgeland, MS), I drive. Airline connections to Champaign from Jackson aren't the greatest and I can get there faster driving than flying.

I live in Myrtle Beach. Years ago when my son was in Nashville trying to be "discovered" he made a trip to visit a buddy at Ole Miss before driving home to MB.

He called me early Sunday morning to say his motor had blown up and needed me to come get him. I'll spare you all the details but I got up, drank a couple of 5 hour energys and struck out.

The nearest town was Breman Ga off I-20. I just Google Mapped it - it's 12 and 37 minutes. 839 miles round trip. Only stopped to fill up. Its the same distance as driving from MB to New Orleans.

I mean, that’s an extreme example.. You stayed up til 6 am, then rode in a cramped car , presumably with a mean hangover, for 11 hours in 100 degree weather.. if it was me, id never want to road trip again either.. i think most comparisons in this thread are more apples to apples- and the typical flying experience these days reminds me more of your hellish road trip you described, versus the road trips im used to, cruising along in my own truck with the AC set where i want it, music playing as loud or low as i want it, stopping whenever i want and it’s usually a more relaxing, pleasant experience than flying .

I always drive. Not because I'm scared to fly, I have many times before and I have no issue with it but I like having my own vehicle and not having to rent one or take ubers everywhere. I also enjoy the scenery of the drive and I'm weirdly fascinated at getting of the interstate or highways in small podunk areas that you've never heard of to get gas or food.

I've made the drive from BR to Vegas many times, also gone to Miami a few times as well. My in laws live in the Ozarks in Oklahoma and I've made that drive a fair few times as well and once to Denver. I've only driven to DC once, I've flown there every other time but that isn't really a city you need a car in much because the metro was always reliable although I've heard lately it's been having issues

Driving other than to the Pacific Northwest or California.

Flying only if there are non-stop flights available from Nashville.

Weather can be a limit: too hot in midsummer, too frozen in midwinter.

Traffic is a major problem going to New England if we can't time the drive to go NYC on a Sunday both ways.

We've been wanting to go to Nova Scotia for several years, but the flight connections are time consuming misery and driving goes through New England.

No easy answers for cross country travel.

I used to drive to Oregon (from BR) every year for 7 years - loved driving through the mountain states. It got old though so now I fly every year.
