Anything over 4 and I’m flying.

4 hours used to be my threshold but the added time getting to the airport now makes me consider driving up to 6 hours. Anything over that is an automatic flight. I cannot stand traffic and road idiots. Rather fly and nap.

Well, i cant sleep on planes unless it’s an international flight.. so not a factor for me.. and i agree that roads, esp interstates have become extremely congested and full of terrible drivers in the last few years.. still, id rather drive and be somewhat more in control of my trip than fly, and be 100% at the mercy of the airlines and the TSA.. and at least in my vehicle i know i wont be sitting next to a colicky baby or have some 300 lb slob with his arse in my face as he searches for something in his overhead luggage .. flying is a total nightmare most of the time .

I drive from New Orleans to Michigan once per year, and if not for a wife who is afraid of flying, I’d fly. Driving is much more dangerous, puts a ton of miles on your vehicle, and you burn 4 days round trip sitting in your car.

Drive, all day every day. Flying is like going to Walmart now.

A six hour drive is easy.

I’d love to drive from Baton Rouge to Alaska. Bucket list item.

My bucket list includes riding my motorcycle on the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) from San Diego, California Seattle, Washington.

The wife would like to join me but would never ride from N.O. to San Diego on the back of the bike so she'd fly and I'd pick her up at the airport and go from there.

Her butt is only good for around 250 miles a day tops, so it would take me several days to make the PCH trek. Then she'd fly back to N.O. from Seattle and I'll ride my cruiser back to N.O.

The decision making is different for direct vs connecting flight. For instance had a major conference last year, 14 hour drive vs no direct flights. I did 2 days of 7 and 7. And turned out to be the right move as the one flight option I was looking at had an issue and was diverted so I made out much better.
Air travel today is horribly unreliable.

My dream trip is the Alaska Highway (AlCan) from just north of Seattle , thru Canada (White Horse, Yukon etc) 1400 mi all the way up to Fairbanks AK….. Really need a couple weeks to do it right.. the scenery is supposed to be spectacular, you can Google the pics.. im trying to decide if i want to rent an RV to do it, then fly back.. or just use my own truck, but then of course id have to drive back which would double the time and would need to have at least a month free .

I drive from Atlanta to New Orleans about 3 times per year.
71/2 hours door to door. Much better than dealing with idiots at both airports.

This is where I am at. The frustration with driving a distance that takes more than 6 hours isn’t often worth it. A few factors that I will take into consideration

* Time - More than 6 hours as the benchmark
* Are direct flights available
* Traffic congestion along the route
* Can I travel with only a carryon

I'd rather drive, but if the drive is going to take multiple days I'll probably fly.

No issue doing a 10-12 hour drive though.

6 hours is nothing. We actually enjoy road trips. My wife is a very good navigator.

I’m not a flyer so I’ll drive no matter how far.

I fly over 6 hour's because:

1) dont want to burn 1/2 of a 7 day vacation just getting there.

2) when we go on vacation we then rent a car and then drive all over the region visiting this beautiful country. It not uncommon for me to put a 1000 miles on a rental because I sometimes like to stay at 2 or 3 places on a week vacation.

For example. Fly to San Fran stay two nights, then 3 nights in Yosemite, then 2 nights on Monterrey etc..

Pretty much done this all the country now with most trips centered around a National Park.

If it’s six hours, I would no doubt rather drive.

I chose to drive 15 hours rather than flying to Omaha a few months ago. Flying is just a pain in my opinion. If there’s a group of people going some place, I’d try to drive.

I'll drive. In fact, we're planning a trip to the southwest for Thanksgiving and will cover about 3200 miles round trip. I like to see the country and stop at a few places along the way.

A good odyssey is underrated and this is one of the very few (maybe only) place in the world where you can do such a thing without passports, visas, permits, border crossings, customs officials, and other hassles.

Depends on the drive. Is that 6 hours Houston to NOLA for a weekend? frick that. I’m door to door in half that time flying and that drive sucks. And 12 hours on the road eats up a weekend quick.

Driving through the mountains for a 7-10 day vacation is a different story. That’s pleasant.
