Moscas? Fuhgeddaboutit. I practically lived there. Selling bootleg hooch, running numbers and delivering messages to Pauly ( who never used the telephone ).
I practically grew up there. Fuhgeddaboutit.

I'm just saying. In conversations about the New Orleans mafia, it's odd not to see it mentioned.
I loved it too growing up, especially their Chicken LA Grande. So much so that I analyzed that dish until I could figure out each ingredient and recreate it at home. I love that dish.
Hopefully I don't get the broke legs now.

Fuhgeddaboutit.
We Cosa Nostra guys admire anybody who can taste a wonderful dish and figure out exactly how to replicate it.
Same goes for somebody who can hear a song and then play it on the piano or violin.
We love Italian opera.
We are not like the savage animals involved in organized crime these days. Fuhgeddaboutit.
My meeting with the Syndicate in NYC is delayed due to weather, so, I have lots of time to reminisce about my favorite hits and mob stories.

I don't believe the old Hollywood style mafia with its hierarchy and ruling commission has existed for a very long time.
I've read that the mafia in NY is stronger than it has been in awhile due to the FBI putting most of their resources towards terrorism.

I had a lot of friends who went to a parochial school in Metairie with Marcello's grandchildren, the Marullos, Rizzutos etc. You'd hear parents whisper and stuff.
They all seemed pretty cool when we'd be playing together in the neighborhood or on the levee.
Also know the Marcello that ran video poker for a lot of bars in Nola & Metairie. Also a really nice guy.
I'm sure their money & connections got the kids and grandkids set up in businesses like owning bars in the Quarter, video poker etc but I don't think they were running around breaking people's legs like on TV.

I think I did, but honestly, I don't really know. He was a super rich guy, but didn't really work or flash his money. He "invested" in stocks. He kept his money in the form of gold krugerrands. I was told he was a bookie, and I believe it.
I knew him when he was much older, he would tell me stories about gambling and whatnot. Old man died two days before the LSU @ TN game in 2011. (It was my 21st birthday, only reason I remember that).
His family owns like seven greek restaurants in his area, from top dollar, to chinky pizza place.
If I had to guess, he was a member of organized crime.

wasn't he the Gambino(NYC) underboss for Louisiana at one point?
Not really. There were direct immigrations from Silicy (and other parts) to New Orleans and they've always operated as an independent family. They have a stronger alliance/relationship with Chicago/St. Louis, than any New York family, although they have been allied with the Genovese family of the "Five Families".
"Underboss" is a title within a family. The Matranga/Carolla/Marcello organization has always had its own Boss/Underboss/Consig and Capos/crews.

had a couple of guys in my frat that lived a pretty opulent lifestyle whose family owned a small grocery store, not much more than a convenience store really, they still have the store and the lifestyle, everyone suspected, no one asked

My grandfather had some dealings with "organized crime" due to his job. Also, my grandmother (same side) has a couple cousins involved. I don't know any of them, but my grandpa has some pretty cool stories about it.

Ooh I forgot about a kid I went to school with.
his dad either prosecuted Marcello, or ratted on him to the prosecution. Well he was murdered (the dad) near where my cousins grew up in Madisonville.

My dad's company painted a house for a "connected" guy back in the 80's. There was one room in the house that we were told not to enter under any circumstances. I asked the guy's kid who was about my age what the deal was and he said he didn't know, the same rule applied to him and his father wasn't someone that people disobeyed.
I watched Bad Boys 2 too

Diamond Jim Moran (James Brocato). His daughter was our neighbor. He usually came to visit her in a limo (not the Corvette) and his driver would sit outside to wait. He would give silver dollars to the neighborhood kids so it was a special event whenever he came to visit.

There are some old retired mob guys down here in west palm. They hang out at Rachels which is a high end strip club. Nice guys. They are pretty old, but I wouldn't frick with them.

Next time you are in Barnes and Noble pick up a copy of Mr New Orleans by Frenchy Brouillette, its in the "Local" section.
Gives a great laydown of the underworld in NO.
