Looking into moving into this area. How are the public schools in south Carolina? Wanting to take a trip out here soon to see if it's a good fit for the family. Our jobs allow for moving around easily so that's not much of a factor. Ever get any snow? TIA

Better than LA schools. Public wise Anderson and Spartanburg schools are usually ranked higher.

It is in the ice belt so sleet and freezing rain are more common than snow. The area generally doesn't "shut down" for more than a day or two per storm and it only averages maybe one good winter storm a year. Maybe once a decade you get a foot of snow but usually it is an inch or two.

I live up in the Asheville area (45 minutes north). Greenville is pretty cool. Lots of jobs, decent economy, good small- but international- airport, Asheville is less than an hour north (great restaurants and beer, fun getaway) You could do much worse than Greenville.

If I could live in a place within 30 miles of Greenville, it would be Landrum, SC.

Greenville is basically a poor man's Knoxville. Or a rich man's Huntsville.

Actually Huntsville is probably nicer than Greenville.

And Asheville is alright if you like tourists and hippies.

How far of a drive to the beach? Is there alot of hiking/outdoor trails near? Property taxes high? Low crime?

3 hrs 15 minutes to Folly Beach. Longer to the Horry and Georgetown County beaches because there's no interstate.

I live in Simpsonville which is a suburb of Greenville. We have lived in a number of cities ranging from Seattle to Charlottesville and Greenville is by far the best place we have ever lived. Good food, great small city vibe. There is a reason why businesses are flocking here and it continues to grow.

For schools, we specifically chose our neighborhood because it had a 10 rated school and was one of the few in the area. Highly recommend this city but make sure you do research about schools. Stay away from Anderson and Spartanburg.

Currently live in Columbia, but from Greenville/Mauldin. Greenville is really nice. Good public schools. Downtown area is really nice. Short drive to the mountains or beach.

Better beaches in NC and GA. 4 hours to Myrtle Beach.

Yes, and Western NC is just a short ride away. I have spent a huge part of my like in Pisgah Natl Forest.

Property taxes high?

Certainly reasonable. The millage is similar for our house in Spartanburg to our house in LA.

Low crime?

In general fairly low but that depends on where you are located.

Actually a really large metro area...920k.

And you can jump on the Clemson bandwagon.

I live in Powdersville area of the metro area. Schools are great and I’m 10 minutes from downtown Greenville.

Housing is going up but still probably cheaper than almost anywhere in the US. Property taxes included.

Lots of amazing hiking nearby. Everything from easy hikes to hard strenuous hikes that will really challenge you. Great food scene also.

City limits of Greenville are really small but the metro area is over 1 million. I’m from the area but my wife is from Chicago and loves it. Very conservative and honestly a great place to live. I work for Delta and am based out of ATL and GSP airport is awesome. 20 min flight to ATL and then anywhere in the world from there. Other airlines also service other major cities like Chicago, Miami, Houston, etc. before COVID delta has directs to NYC. And cheap airlines like allegiant we service Florida directly.

Rarely any snow or ice. It does happen, but is rare. Honestly in terms of actually living there I think it’s one of the top places in the US. Other places are way cool to visit but to actually live Greenville is awesome.

It's a beautiful place. It's close enough to the big mountains of North Carolina that you can see them in the distance. I was just there over the summer to take the MCAT of all things and I was VERY impressed. I felt safe in the downtown area where I walked around Falls Park on the Reedy and lots of nice little restaurants to try. Better than any place in Louisiana and it's not close.
