Currently living in Lexington. Two hours to the beach and about 2 1/2 to the mountains. Great schools and close enough to the city for entertainment.

I lived there for four years, and I absolutely loved it. I plan to move back there down the road. It’s a beautiful area where your dollar goes far with a low cost of living and reasonable home prices, pretty good public schools (depending where you live in the county), very good private schools, and excellent high school sports. It’s the only place I’ve ever lived where the local government actually got stuff done that constituents desired. There are plenty of major employers like BMW, Michelin, Fluor, and others. The main player hospital system is the best I’ve ever worked in, but there are plenty of healthcare options. Downtown is very safe and very family friendly, but also has a great bar scene. The restaurant options in Greenville are the best I’ve experienced in the South outside of Athens and Charleston. You get plenty of great concerts in Greenville alone, but you also have quick and easy access to Atlanta, Charlotte, Asheville, and Columbia. GSP is also a really good airport. There’s also really convenient lake access to multiple major lakes, and the outdoor scene offers all kinds of activities.

There are some things to be aware of though. The town has grown faster than the roads have been improved, so traffic can get pretty bad at times. Woodruff Road is a nightmare, so avoid that at all costs. Like any major southern city, there is some degree of crime, but only in very predictable pockets. And for some reason that I have never understood, liquor stores close at 7pm across the state.

You can expect 1 to 2 snowstorms per year that usually lasts about 36 to 48 hours where all schools and businesses close.

If and when I move back, I’m buying the biggest contiguous piece of property that I can find in Travelers Rest or Woodruff.

Does SC have state run liquor stores or something?

Nope. Just really inconvenient liquor laws. I buy most of my liquor in Georgia for convenience and better selection.

Public schools in the up-state of South Carolina are very good. Lower-state....not so much. Greenville is great overall.

Been here 3 years. Met my wife and we decided to make here home. The secret is getting out. I have no complaints about the area. It’s perfect IMO. We are building about 6-7 miles north of town. Just before travelers rest. Plenty of industry and jobs. Are you moving here for work?

I'm gonna hijack this thread for a sec.

I have to go to Clemson in November. The family is coming with so I want to turn it into a mini-vacation. We have 3 days of play. I want to stay within 2 hrs of Clemson, give or take a little. What's the best bet for a family of 4 with 2 kids under 10? Was thinking Charlotte or Greenville, but maybe Asheville? I'm not very knowledgeable on the area. Touristy is fine.

First are you Republican or Democrat? ....if the latter, then the Upstate is now officially closed to newcomers.

Seriously, it's a wonderful town/area. live in Fountain Inn just south of Greenville and absolutely love it. I moved up from Ga. twenty-some odd years ago and have loved it ever since.

All the good things everyone prior said about the area. Great hiking/mountain rec things just north of G-ville. Great downtown area that just continues to upgrade. Good mix of people from all walks of life/areas of the country. You'll love it.

Unless your a Democrat...then you'll despise it. Stay away at all costs...

I don’t know if it’s still this way or not, but mauldin, outside of Greenville, used to have a fantastic baseball program...but honestly, South Carolina has some of the best high school baseball in the country, up there with Florida, Louisiana, and California.

I graduated from Presbyterian College many moons ago, but traveled up there often and still have many friends in the area. Greenville/Spartanburg is nice and has definitely gotten more upscale in the 20+ years since I graduated.

Honestly, Asheville isn't as fun for kids. We have the Biltmore House (think Disney for old people lol) and a ton of good food and breweries. Not so much stuff for kids.

Greenville has a bunch of cool stuff for a 2 day trip but COVID will make it tougher. I would check Asheville, Greenville, and Charlotte and see if any of the cities have anything going on while in town. Another option is spend a day in Greenville, and if on the way home stop in atl and go to the aquarium, coke, lego the next day

Just as an additional note:

Greenville, Asheville, and Spartanburg are 32, 34 and 35 on US News list of Best PLaces to live in the US. For reference BR, NOLA and Shreveport are 132, 144 and 148 out of the 150 cities listed.

We are moving back in the first quarter of 2021. Already bought our house in Simpsonville. Property taxes, car insurance, and home insurance will be about 50 percent less than Baton Rouge....plus virtually no crime... oh, and people are nice.

I am retiring, but could easily pick up work if I wanted to...
