My stepmother has severe borderline personality disorder. She has some split personality issues. Fortunately I haven’t spoken to her in two decades. *Whew

This may have been covered already, i don't know.
The short answer is this.
Clinically it's called disssociative identity disorder and it's garbage. It doesn't exist and if anyone out there has a therapist or psychiatrist who diagnoses you with this horsehit, run for the frickin' hills. It's complete and utter quackery and those who endorse this are on the fringes of the mental health community.
Borderline personality disorder by any other name is still borderline personality disorder.

Married to borderline and dissociative identity personality. Technically, I guess personality should be plural.
I recognize them victim, protector, teenager, and child. She also describes a dark inner voice that she fights against, but I don’t recognize it as a personality. Although I’ve thought at times the protector might be the devil (kidding. maybe.) It took many years of her running through therapists until finding one that was able to break through her walls.
It’s kind of weird how she kind knew something was up but at the same time vigorously denied it. Reviewing journals with different handwriting corresponding to different moods helped to ultimately provide the proof she needed.
TLDR: yes.

People who are exposed to periods of extreme stress can disassociate as a means to cope with the stress. It’s too boring to explain the details of it here.
But multiple personality disorder is not real and has no basis in science in any culture or population.
Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Borderline personality disorder are something completely different.
