I have a family member with diagnosed bipolar syndrome. You used to have to walk on eggshells around her because she would snap all of a sudden. She's better since she's been medicated, but we had an incident when my youngest was 3 where she went from playing nicely to hurting her, resulting in an ER trip.
It was a terrible experience, and I was really mad about it for years, but that incident got the parents to get her help instead of ignoring the obvious problem.
