I've recently started smoking cigars at home to relax, and though I'm still a beginner, I really enjoy them. Recently, I walked into a smoke shop, and they had a section with pipes and tobacco stored in glass jars. The aromas were incredible, which got me thinking—could this be something worth trying?

I know pipe smoking was more popular in the early 20th century, and I honestly can’t remember seeing anyone smoke a pipe since I was about 10 years old. It seems like a niche hobby these days.

Does anyone here smoke a pipe? Is it worth getting into? How does it compare to cigars? Are there any significant differences? What are the pros and cons?

One downside I noticed is that the pipes themselves seemed quite expensive. Just curious if it's something worth exploring.

I smoke a pipe with real tobacco. I find it very satisfying and relaxing. I’ve smoked for years.

I also like a good cigar. I would describe cigars as “fuller-bodied”. The aromas are very different.

If you try the pipe, I would look for a nice one that’s not too expensive. There is a great variety in pipe tobaccos, which is part of the pleasure. I would buy a small quantity (maybe two ounces) of a few different blends and try them out.

Check YouTube to get an idea of how to properly pack a pipe so that it stays lit. It’ll take some practice.

If you have more questions, let me know.

Pipes present more of a hobby opportunity, IMO, and can be more satisfying than smoking a cigar, because you put a little bit of work in on the front in to make sure you have a high equality smoking experience. I smoke cigars more frequently than I do pipes, just because they’re easier and I’m lazy.

There are different types of wood, multiple packing techniques, etc. Really, really enjoyable if you’re interested in taking the time to learn and try it.

Lots of YouTube & social media videos available. I highly recommend it.

ETA: The Pipe Cottage has some great content.

Life. So much going on. Unfortunately, this season is the least amount I’ve ever watched. I check the scores here every night but it’s fell to the wayside.

Did see the Hayward news. All I could say is “why?”

I smoke cigars and pipes.

They’re completely different besides them both being tobacco. Cigars are generally light and forget unless there’s construction or humidity issues. You’ll experience a full battery of heavy tobacco flavor in a nice conveniently rolled bundle of leaves.

Pipes are a bit more of an art and delicate compared to cigars. It is cheaper in the long run especially if you start out with corn cob pipes. The flavors of tobacco are generally a lot lighter. Keeping a pipe lit is a nightmare though for beginners. It’s a completely different type of puff than what you do with cigars. Generally pipes will be more acceptable around people as they smell a lot lighter and more aromatic as well. Another advantage is being able to put it down and relight it without an issue.

I’d say try out a corn cob pipe with a small amount of captain black or something comparable. Watch a video on how to pack the pipe and light it before you try. You’ll be frustrated at some point most likely but keep experimenting with it.

No but I recently watched the latest episode of Club Random with Bill Maher and in it his guest, Quentin Tarantino, smokes a huge pipe that looks like something a cartoon character would use .

I smoked a pipe when I was at LSU. I picked it up from my grandfather. Had a hell of a time convincing people it was just tobacco. Everyone assumed it was weed and they were always bugging me to let them hit it. Then would be confused when it was what I told them it was.

Yes but infrequently and usually in the cooler weather months for some reason. But when I do it’s very enjoyable. More pleasing fragrance than cigars.

Pipe smoker for years. I find it relaxing, and I’ve enjoyed collecting antique English pipes. The oldest one I smoke is from 1907.

Of all the smokes, pipe smoke smells good. Found my dad's old pipe last year. after 30 years in the bottom of a box, it still smelled good.

I used to smoke cigars, and I enjoyed them. I didn't mind paying $15-20 for a good stick because I didn't chain smoke them. I decided to try pipe smoking because pipe smoke just smells so much better. I haven't picked up a cigar since. It took a while to get the techniques down, but once you do it's a relaxing experience. Once you find a tobacco you like, it's almost like having dessert after a meal.

Pipes are cool and people even are fine with you smoking around children or at daytime parties.

I've turned a few pipes even.
You should try it, make sure you get a pipe tool, they are handy. I like pipe zippo's too.

This makes we want to smoke mine!

$40 for a pretty good one is not too bad.

Occasionally, I have a couple nice pipes. I love apple and cherry. I use Deja Vu Smoke Shop on Jefferson hwy in Baton Rouge. Amazing selection of pipe tobacco.

I just started a few months ago, and I’ve really enjoyed it.

No need to spend a lot on a pipe before you find out if you enjoy it or not. Get you a simple corncob pipe $15-20 from Missouri Meerschaum, I have the country gentleman, some pipe cleaners and a few different bulk samples from a retailer.

It’s advised to stay away from aromatic blends for beginners because they’re often loaded with toppings that are wet and hard to keep lit, and can also cause tongue bite. They also cover up the taste of the actual tobacco a lot of the time. There are exceptions of course. The first tobacco I smoked was captain black, and it’s an aromatic, and smells amazing in the pouch, but that doesn’t really translate to the smoke. It is however really easy to smoke, but after having sampled a bunch of different varieties (Virginia perique “VaPers”, Virginia Burleys “VaBurs”, straight Virginia’s, English blends, etc.) and having revisited Captain black I understand the complaints, the tobacco flavors really don’t come through.

I’m not a cigar guy, it’s never interested me, so I can’t really speak to the differences. I have found that smoking a pipe is almost like a meditative exercise for me. It forces me to slow down, focus on my breathing, you don’t want to smoke it hard and fast, and just relax.
