I visited a couple months ago. I loved it. Didn’t experience the gloom obviously so I can’t comment on that.
Other than seeing more gay and trans flags around it really didn’t seem a ton more liberal/far left than San Antonio, Texas. What I will say though is I got tired of the people very fast. I experienced two kinds of people, friendly locals that seemed to mostly be from the surrounding areas as opposed to actual Seattle. They were all super chill and friendly. Seemed like dudes I would encounter in the south. But when you have to interact with about 60% of females there, or any dude with a hipster shirt or tatted up, they are all rude and pretentious and think you are being a real dickhead by simply speaking. I get the sense these are the libs that moved from elsewhere and ruined the city. They are also probably vitamin D deficient which is why they lash out like that.
I’m not even gonna mention the drug and homeless issues, but I will say I saw people doing drugs that I don’t even know what they were.
I wouldn’t want to live, but it is excellent to visit. I would visit there 5 years the rest of my life if I’m able.
Now, what does the OT say about Portland? I haven’t been. From conservative friends I have heard all the problems are much worse in Portland. From liberal friends they say it is a better and more affordable Seattle. What is the truth?

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. I've lived up here for 5 years. You're correct when you say Tacoma is a shite hole. I avoid Tacoma and Seattle unless I have to go. Homelessness, drugs, vehicle theft are a big issue around here. Property is insanely expensive, $2-300,000 for a decent mobile home on the Kitsap peninsula and majority are in an HOA. Not to mention the massive influx of Illegals and Families of Guatemalans with 5+ children that are all the same age flooding the surrounding areas. Outdoor activities can't be beat, though. Lots of BLM land for shooting, riding dirt bikes, hiking, although more and more of it is getting shut down. Fishing sucks out here unless you have a boat, as it gets to be shoulder to shoulder. Traffic gets old quick if you're coming from a small town where you're not used to it. Forget about getting anywhere in a timely manner on the Holidays.

I live in the area.
It’s gloomy from mid late Nov to April. Constant drizzle (I wouldn’t call it rain, almost not umbrella worthy) but it is quite depressing. Temps get as low as mid 20s but most of the time mid 30s doesn’t snow.
Tacoma is NOT Seattle. It’s close but it’s a lot more ghetto. Def where the poorer people live. Still better than LA in terms of crime etc

The gloom is better than summers in the south especially if you have to work outside in it. I love temps in the 40’s and rain and if you enjoy skiing they have great snow up that way

I’m a Seattle native. It is the most overcast city in the U.S., Portland is number two. I lived in the Bay Area for decades and had to re-adjust to the gloomy weather. The demographics are not typical. Seattle has more Asians than blacks.
The real estate is expensive with the average home price almost $900,000. Salaries are also high.
An estimated 1 in 12 Seattle residents have a net worth of at least $1 million.

I just spent the last 31 years of my life in the area. I feel it's easily one of the best places in America to live. I used to go into the city every day, but I stopped in 2014 due to the craziness that started around the homeless boom and the hard left turn of the city council that allowed it. Property taxes are out of control now. I was paying $1200/mo with no increase in county services. I made bank when I sold my place in Carnation, 20 miles east of the city, which has allowed me to retire early.
The weather didn't bother me at all. Early December to late January can be challenging due to the darkness, but I'd just go night skiing or lock myself in my studio. I will def move back if I can, but I won't ever live in King County again.
Avoid Tacoma. The 9th Ward might be safer!

Rough, blue collar and very expensive.

Tacoma is cool. Just stay north of Division Ave/6th Ave and east of Stevens St.

what I’ve learned about weather after living in some extreme climates. It’s all about the sun.
Couldn't agree more. Sun and wind are what truly matter. Humidity is the next factor.

Portland is a mini Seattle. The downtown hit rock bottom from 2020 - 2023. The good news is they have voted out the Soros DA. Looks promising that the city council elections in a month will favour moderate Dems.
Portland lost a TON of business to the near suburbs (mine in SW) and people are taking measures to ensure that rock bottom was 2021 / 22 and that things are going to improve now.

Yeah, I live in West Seattle and can recommend this area to the OP along with other hodgepodgy urban burbs I lived in that surround downtown like Fremont, Wallingford, Eastlake/Volunteer and Beacon/Columbia City/Georgetown. Pretty much the only areas I've not lived for good reason are downtown and Cap Hill. Do that and you'll be fine.

I have a cousin that lives there. We've visited the past couple years and it's always gloomy. It's kind of depressing actually, but she says they've gotten used to it
My daughter lived there for about seven or eight years, and we visited a lot to see grandkids. The quote above overstates it. Seattle is like a lot of places that have marine environments - most notably the UK - in that it has beautiful days and gloomy days, and it’s hard to predict which you will get. I have been to Seattle when the weather was absolutely wonderful, and I’ve had a week there when it was shite the whole time.
I’ll say this for it, when it’s on it’s the best weather imaginable, and it’s on a lot. The winter is tiresome, though.

So where is the best place to live that you don’t have to have F you money? Olympia seems a bit cheaper but that seems like a miserable commute

Not Seattle but have been living in SW Washington along the gorge the last 7 years. I love it. Experience all the seasons and plenty of outdoor activities (hiking, fishing, food) even in the rainy season which isn’t bad.
