My grandmother took me to church throughout my childhood. I made a lot of friends at church. Thing is, I never believed, it was always nonsense to me. That said, I enjoyed the people at church so I kept on going. Don't regret it one bit. The vast majority of churchgoing folks are good people.

Why would anyone participate in this ritual?
jesus didn't endorse it and it only came into being in the 1500's to support the lagging fishing industry in Britain. King Edward, Henry VIII's son, decreed that all church members should eat fish on Fridays so that the fishermen would have a guaranteed market for the week. It was later expanded to the 40 days of Lent as a sacrifice.
But I always laugh at the thought of my poor practicing Catholic brethern sacrificing so severely during Lent and on Friday's with crawfish, shrimp, crabs, fried fish, etc. instead of hamburgers or pot roast.

I’m not Catholic anymore, but if I were, and I was going to break the rules on Friday, I’d probably pick a tasty rib eye or prime rib over a damn burger to get my money’s worth for the infraction, but then I’d also pick better seafood than fried catfish and shite. Come on man. You can do better.

I love lent. My husband and I can go to restaurants on Fridays that are usually crowded with no wait since we are not Catholic but most of Baton Rouge seems to be.

No, you are not Catholic. You may have been baptized Catholic, but if you do not follow “their silly rules”, when said rules basically define the Chirch, why even bother saying that you are Catholic? You probably are a good person; maybe follow another Christian faith with which you agree?
The rules of the Church have not measurably changed in hundreds of years. And don’t come at me with the Priest stuff. Frick them to hell. This is about people (and we all know there are a LOT of them) that say they are Catholic, but really are not practicing - and complain about the faith - and would probably be happier worshipping elsewhere. I say go there and be happy. Quit complaining about something you know will not change.
