Ugh... 5 pages too late. 
Another “devout Catholic” who doesn’t understand their own faith. Eating fish at Mike Anderson’s, crawfish boils, (etc) is neither the spirit or intent of abstaining from meat on Fridays.

My parents are in this boat. Will go to Mike Anderson's and split charbroiled oysters and seafood platter every Friday night during Lent.

I have given up eating beef throughout all of Lent. I am also abstaining from alcohol, porn, and masturbation. Laugh at me all you want to, but I am at a point in my life where I am starting to take my faith very seriously. Lent is about penance and forgiveness. I am doing everything in my power to repent for my inequities.
As Catholics, it isn't enough anymore to tell people about the faith. We must show them what the faith is truly about. And the only way to do that is to practice what we preach. And that is what I am striving to do.

By practicing what we preach. Is it enough to say you are Christian? Jesus sure as heck didn't preach that. I can easily tell someone that I'm Catholic and that I attend St. Jude Catholic Church in Waipahu, Hawaii. But if I do nothing to outwardly show I am a Christian, what good does it serve me to just attend mass on Sunday? And that goes for all of us.
We need to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. We need to care for the poor as we would our own family. We need to practice what Jesus preached instead of just professing it on Sunday mornings. I am one of the guilty ones who has failed to do any of that more often than not.
Lent isn't about fasting. That's part of it, but it's most definitely not the whole picture. The message of Lent is one of spiritual re-birth. It's symbolic of the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert and was tempted by the Devil. Whereas Adam failed to overcome the Devil in the Garden of Eden, Jesus conquered the Devil's sheepish tricks and silver tongue in the desert of Palestine. We are called by God during this Lenten season to fast, reflect, and to overcome the temptations of the flesh.

I'd say the whole point is to remember Jesus' sacrifice of his life for our salvation.
Eating anything that tastes good and fills you up is in no way a 'sacrifice'.
If you want to sacrifice on Lenten Fridays don't eat at all, drink only water and don't use your phone or watch TV.
That said, the entire argument is silly. These rules are of no importance. Jesus condemned the pharisees for putting their faith in the law rather than love.

I'm an atheist and do those things. Going to church and giving up porn and cow for a month and a half doesn't make up for you being a shitty human the other 10 and a half months (I obviously don't know you, but that's the way I took your post).
If you want to be a better man, father, husband, son, person...cook yourself a big ole steak and invite someone over who you've wronged in the past over to have a steak with you. Find a homeless guy and take him out for dinner.
You can be better by doing what you know is right, not what some book tells you is right.

I’m Catholic and have never bothered with that. Always ate meat when I felt like it throughout lent. I always thought that was stupid.

You obviously didn't get the gist of my post. I'm giving up those things permanently (sans the beef - that's just for dietary reasons).

And I'm sure you are quite confident in your opinion that "some book" had absolutely no bearing on how your morality was shaped during your upbringing.
That book has heavily influenced western thought, morality, literature, and art for the last 1,500+ years. Though you could be the only one in this part of the world who has never felt its influence. I don't know.
