Good buddy of mine basically gave his life for the job for decades. Retired now but this one case still haunts him... The Boisfontaine murder. One day he will catch the no good some of a bitch.

If you wanna know what it's like.... just wake up around 3-330am (after going to bed around midnight) and go to the most disgusting area you know. Stay there for about 28 hrs straight with nasty fast food and tons of coffee. Get zero help from anyone who witnessed everything and run into dead end after dead end. When your completely frustrated and pissed off, Then your at the tip of the homicide det. iceberg.

Knew a SGT of homicide in the mid to late '70s, he talked me out of joining, Seems he saw the changes coming.

One of my regulars at the restaurant I used to work at was one. Probably all of our favorite regular we had. Never creepy, never rude, great tipper, interesting to talk to.. just all around was a really stand up guy.

Wonder where he is now.

I have known several because of my job. I can second the great tipper comment. The one thing they all had in common was amazing gallows senses of humor. The scene in fight club where the insurance guys are cracking jokes about the burned out car, alot like that. Very telling about how they cope mentally. Lots of single malt.lol

Pretty damn accurate.

I worked Major Assaults for the first years when I got into investigations so our work mirrored a lot of what the Homicide guys in our office did.

We used to love punting off our cases when the victim would take a turn for the worse and die. We handled all the cases if the victim lived. Asking the victim who shot them always made life much easier on our end.

The work is fascinating at times, but other times it can be frustrating. First 48 does a good job of showing some of our methods and sources and the cases they choose are usually workable cases.

I will say that regardless of who you are, the work changes your soul. Some of the stuff seen and horrific tales of the end of life can never be unseen.

The guys in the Baton Rouge Police Department are honestly some of the best in the business. You can’t replicate the experience they get in a short amount of time. With that said, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if most or not all of them have some form of PTSD when they finally leave.

The best litmus test for a homicide detective is the death of children. If you can stomach those and still build your case, the rest is easy.

I was one with BRPD from 2018 until earlier this year. It’s not glamorous at all. I’ve since left law enforcement and left the state/region. I don’t miss BRPD or BR at all but I honestly miss working murders and my coworkers. Nothing professionally will ever compare to working a case and everything starts to come together.

Yep I agree with that assessment. I’m almost completely desensitized to death aside from a loved one and even that doesn’t have the effect it used to have

Did you have to work patrol first? Or is patrol worse than homicide?

I worked almost 6 years in patrol. It’s all a matter of preference. Homicide was my goal from the moment I got hired so personally I much preferred homicide.

I work as an investigator for a tech company investigating various incidents. I’d prefer not to get more specific.

Pretty much. I've participated in many OT threads that have resulted in solving mysteries and crimes.
