re: Anyone have to attend a "Required" company Christmas party

My work hasn't had a Christmas party in 33 years.
We did have a New Years party offsite for 2000.
Am so looking forward to my annual Christmas bonus, $50 Walmart card. It will really motivate going into 2025!

Hey, that's better than some random item that I get every year. I'd rather just a straight, even 20 buck Visa gift card that I can at least use for a free dinner or something useful from the store. At least you can go to Walmart and pay for half your groceries with the gift card.
I don't understand why companies feel they have to be "creative" with their holiday gifts. I think I probably speak for all workers when I say I just want cash or the equivalent of cash. That's much more appreciated than something random that will collect dust and make me resent the company.
Heck, I like splurging on coffee, even a 10 dollar Starbucks card will go further with me than something random.

That's the thing. We don't even get bonuses or even a COLA, have to pay more of our Healthcare, but are required to come to an evening party.
I'd leave if I wasn't retiring soon and overall I manage all my own work and don't have to interact with many people.

Ours is on December 23 during work hours, we get to wear Christmas pajamas, people bring food and snacks. No one really "works" that day and pretty much just mingle. They let us off at noon and don't come back until the 27th

My old company party was at CCLA with great food, open bar, and a band. They would pay for your uber/taxi. I drank my bonus every year and had a blast along with everyone else.
My new company doesn't do shite. Not even a $20 gift card to go buy a ham for Christmas.

It's not required but my CFO gets pissed at the couple of people who skip it. He loudly gives them a hard time abt it.

MY work does our during office hours. So it's a free lunch and work only a couple of hours that day.
I’m down for that

One lucky department (draw from hat) gets to have the CEO attend.

I certainly hope not, because I'm currently in the act of skipping mine right now.

When discussed I made it clear that I would not require accommodations on my team's behalf to make it as it was not conducive to my departments morale nor the company's best interest.
Did you send it in a strongly worded email?

We had one years ago and a few employees anonymously paid some Santa strippers to perform. They showed up dressed like Santas and had a radio and just went to work to an unsuspecting audience. They did not stop either, said they were paid but to collect other half of money had to finish act.
Needless to say it was the last company Christmas party. They were fine too. PS, there were no kids at party.

No one ever argues with the sick kid excuse. If you say the words 'stomach bug' and 'coming out of both ends' you can get out of damn near anything. You will be a liar though.

No, the person that is in charge of planning them broached the subject of participation and department heads allowing their team members to miss when a C-level asked how the party went. I made my point known as it felt accusatory and did so in a fashion that would not be career limiting. FFS, a strongly worded email?!? I conveyed my team's concerns and why I agreed with them and wouldn't be requiring them to come. Morale and knowing their boss gives af about them makes my job easier and my department more productive. Someone even with or below me on an org chart will not make demands that have a negative impact on that. Fortunately I know the C-levels and directors agree with me on that point.

I work for a DOD contractor.
Our parties are pretty cool. Great food, drinks and other stuff. I always look forward to it.
And I'm still working from home 2,984 consecutive days counting today.

As one poster already mentioned, the key to a successful event is more single hot women. If your company fails to deliver, it's on them
